A new leader emerges for McBeath

A new leader has emerged to the front of the pack for Moss Point (Miss.) middle linebacker Marquis McBeath (6-0, 217, 4.6) and it may come as a surprise to some.<br>

"Right now, Ole Miss moved into a slight lead," McBeath said. "LSU and Auburn are tied for second and Nebraska is last because of the coaching situation."

LSU had been considered his leader for the past few months but the Tigers have eased up on him a little in the last couple of weeks and now have some ground to make up.

"My dad came home and we talked about it and it seems like Ole Miss is recruiting me the hardest," said McBeath. "They have a bigger need for linebackers and the coaches are telling me I could play as a true freshman. Coach Cutcliffe told me I could step in and play right away."

Although the Rebels have a slight lead, McBeath is keeping an open mind on his official visits so that he can make a sound decision on where he will spend the next four or five years of his life.

"I still want to look at the other ones," he said. "It is going to come down to where I am most comfortable and where I feel like I fit in the best. Also, wherever I can get on the field the earliest."

Leaving the Magnolia State is not that big of a deal to him but he wants to make sure he is ready to leave his family and friends before it is too late. Could Baton Rouge still be his next home?

"Basically, I need to see how I fit in with the players since I would be going from a small town in Mississippi to a big city in Louisiana," McBeath told Tiger Rag. "I need to make sure I won't get too homesick. As for academics, LSU is at the top. With Bradie James leaving, I don't think it would take me too long to play there, either."

Sony's View: The Ole Miss coaches are telling McBeath that he could be their best linebacker coming in and I could tell that was very appealing to him. Watch what happens with Sean Merrill. These two have been talking for the last couple of months about going to the same school. A package deal could be in the works.
