Jeffcoat takes in LSU Spring Practice

There were plenty of big time visitors on LSU's campus yesterday to take in spring practice. But perhaps the most high profile of the group was the early favorite to be the top ranked defensive end in the nation, Jackson Jeffcoat from Plano, Texas.

Jeffcoat and his father, former NFL defensive lineman Jim Jeffcoat, flew into Baton Rouge early Saturday morning and arrived on the LSU campus just as the Tigers were beginning practice.

"We got in town around 10 AM yesterday morning," said Jeffcoat. "Right when we got there they were going out to the practice fields to start practice. It was a good practice, and they did a long scrimmage at the end that was very good. I liked the intensity they had throughout practice."

The 5 star prospect is being recruited as a defensive end by LSU, and he spent the majority of yesterday's practice focusing on the Tigers' defensive line.

"Coach Haley runs practice well," said Jeffcoat, who now tips the scales at 6-5, 230 pounds. "They worked on a lot of drills for staying low and not getting knocked off balance. It was a lot of the same stuff I work on."

Next up for Jeffcoat was a tour of the rest of the football facility, as well as the rest of campus.

"After practice was over we checked out the indoor field and the weight room. Those were both very nice," he said. "We watched a highlight film on the big screen in the meeting room."

"Then we went to see the apartments where players stay," Jeffcoat continued. "We also went to the academic center. They have a lot of new things they're bringing in there, like replacing the old computers with new hybrid computers. I also liked that they always have two students on duty there to help whenever."

Although Jeffcoat enjoyed everything he saw on his visit yesterday, it seemed like he was most impressed with his stop at West Campus Apartments.

"I liked the apartments, they were pretty cool," he said. "They were telling me you get either three or four rooms, and you either have your own bathroom or share with one other person. Plus they already come with furniture and a desk."

After touring the campus, Jeffcoat made another stop by the football center to speak with Coach Haley.

"We went back and talked with Coach Haley for a little while," Jeffcoat said. "That was good too. We just mostly talked about how to react in certain situations. He didn't really go over the depth chart or any of that kind of stuff because that's not important to me. I want to have to compete wherever I go."

With LSU now added to the long list of schools he has already visited, Jeffcoat has a few more visits left on his plate before he sits down and begins making decisions.

"Right now we are still in the information gathering process," he said. "I'm still going to visit Georgia, Florida, USC, Stanford, UCLA, and Cal during the summer. After I visit all those schools I'm going to sit down with my mom and dad and narrow it down to the schools I want to visit again."
