Getting to know Josh Williford

Josh Williford made a strong impression on LSU offensive line coach Greg Studrawa when he camped at LSU last June. His performance earned him an offer from the Tigers and a little more than a month later he put an end to his recruitment. Williford will report to LSU in just a few weeks and here are a few things you may not have known about the Tiger signee.

Josh Williford

Williford on his senior season at Houston Academy….. “We weren’t expected to do much my senior year. We lost two games in the regular season. When we made our run in the playoffs, we went up against a state contender in the first round (Flomaton HS). They were supposed to beat the lights out of us. They were supposed to go to state, but we ended up destroying them (32-14).”

“We came together as a team towards the end of the season. The offensive line was definitely our strong point. We lost in the second round (47-27) to a team that won state (Leroy HS) the past four years.”

On being a two-sport athlete….. “I played basketball, too. Our team did alright. We had a game against one of our rivals, and I had 26 points, 18 rebounds. It was the highlight of my basketball career.”

Is he going to miss basketball..... “I’m going to miss it and all, but it’s not like football. When you’re done with football, you’re done with football. Basketball you can play anytime, anywhere if you wanted to. I’m going to miss playing with my school and stuff.”

On the recruiting process being done….. “I’m glad to have a little bit of down time before I get up there.”

How does a recruit from Alabama decide to go to LSU..... “The thing is you can’t have your mind set on a particular school. I was a big Tennessee fan growing up. Being from Alabama, I always got ragged on for liking Tennessee. I just went and visited the schools and felt what was right for me.”

Any interest in Alabama….. “Don’t get me wrong I did. I wanted to make Alabama and Auburn work, but I just couldn’t. All my best friends are going to Alabama, but I’ll meet new friends at LSU.”

On why LSU is the best fit….. “I just like the family atmosphere, and the women are gorgeous.”

Louisiana is now home to Josh Williford

Offseason workouts….. “We’ve had a lot of bad rain down here, and I don’t have an indoor practice facility so I’ve got to rotate my days around the rain to do my outside running. Once I get [to LSU], it won’t be hard to adjust.”

“I’m 6-7 and weighing 315 pounds. I haven’t timed myself in the 40 (yard-dash) but the best I ran which wasn’t too long ago was a 5.2. The workouts are hard from Coach (Tommy) Moffitt but I’m getting stronger and the running is just a lot of 110s.”

Past injuries….. “Right after football season my freshman year I broke my hip. I’ve rolled my ankle before. I also sprained my MCL in my knee on opening game. It bothered me my senior year and all, but I fought through it. Right when I got into the playoffs my senior year, we were practicing in a downpour, and I slipped and pulled my hip. It hurt me the whole time I played in the playoffs, but it’s back to normal now. I’m hopefully done with injuries.”

On success in the classroom….. “I made a 28 on the ACT. I think I have a 3.4 GPA.”

Williford’s number at LSU will be….. “I don’t know. They said I could wear 72.”

On what he is most looking forward to about being a college student….. “Just the change and all. I’m ready to get out of this town.”

Williford is moving in….. “I’m going to head up there June 3 to get my room fixed up. I’m not sure who I’m rooming with yet.”

Favorite food is..... “Chicken casserole.”

Favorite movie is..... “Troy.”

Watching pro sports..... “Every now and then I do. My favorite basketball player is Lebron James. My favorite football player is Peyton Manning.”

Since Alabama lacks pro sports teams…. “I like the Saints a lot.”

Expectations are….. “I’m going to work hard and do my best every play. I got a lot of size. I want us to win the national championship. I think we can do it. Knock on wood, but I think we have a lot of potential.”
