Watson gets visit from Travis Jones

New LSU assistant coach Travis Jones has only been on the job for a few days but he hit the recruiting trail with a full head of steam.

One of the first contacts he made with prospects for the Class of 2003 was a visit with defensive tackle Ryan Watson (6-4, 280, 4.8) of John Curtis-River Ridge (La.).

"He gave me some background of himself and told me how good of a player I was," Watson told Tiger Rag. "He said he saw some film on me and how he was looking forward to recruiting me."

Watson will get a little more familiar with his new coach when he makes his official visit to Baton Rouge this weekend, along with his good friend and teammate Carnell Stewart.

"I'm looking forward to this visit," Watson said. "I'm really looking forward to getting to know coach Jones. I know a few players over there that went to Curtis so I know a lot of what goes on."

Miami will get the next visit on Jan. 24 but Watson said he is unsure about his scheduled visit to Oklahoma on Jan. 31.

When asked if he had a leader right now, he replied, "Not really. I'm still just looking."

Sonny's View: Watson has already visited Colorado and USC. His visit to Southern Cal went very good but it was more of the city that impressed him than anything else. The Trojans have three commitments from defensive tackle prospects so that could come into play. Keep an eye on Miami.
