Louisiana is prospering with talent for the Class of 2011 and coach Les Miles is doing all he can to get that talent to flow into Baton Rouge. One of the in-state prospects high on his list is St. Augustine High School product Renaldo Thomas (6’4, 205, 4.6).
The hard-hitting free safety was in Baton Rouge on Saturday for LSU’s Academic Junior Day and TigerSportsDigest.com caught up with the Purple Knight to see how the day went.
“It was fun,” Thomas said of Junior Day. “I like it a lot! I learned a lot on this trip especially about the academic side of the school. I really like the academic support system LSU has and my mom was with me and that was big for her too.
“I also saw the weight room, the locker room, and the game day locker room,” Thomas added. “I liked that too. Then I saw the uniforms and they were purple and gold like my team, so I loved that!”
Thomas said the feelings he experienced during his tour around campus almost brought him to making a decision he did not plan on making.
“You know how you go to places or schools and you have that feeling like this is for you,” Thomas said to TigerSportsDigest.com. “Well I had that feeling and I almost committed, but I decided to wait a little longer.
“I was talking to Coach Miles, Coach Cooper (defensive backs coach), and coach Frank,” Thomas continued. “They weren’t rushing me or anything. They let me know that I still had time and they just told me to make the best choice for me. It was tempting though.”
Thomas currently has offers from LSU, Michigan, and SMU, but is also nearing offers from programs such as Kansas State and Tennessee among others. However, according to Thomas, one team is far out in front.
“LSU is at the tip-top of my list,” Thomas concluded.
