A Lasting Impression

There were thousands of spectators on hand for LSU's annual spring game last weekend, and perhaps none were more blown away than Houston (TX) St. Pius X product Kellen Jones.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker called his experience on last Saturday more than he expected, leaving the Tigers high on his interest list.

“It was awesome,” Jones said of his visit to Death Valley. “The atmosphere was electric! There were 22,000 people in attendance and it was only a spring game. I thought the game was very entertaining, and there were also some beautiful young ladies touring me around.”

Jones, who recorded 75 tackles (22 TFL), six sacks, three forced fumbles, three recovered fumbles, two touchdowns and six blocked kicks, earned First-Team All-State honors, making him one of the most decorated visitors touring over the weekend.

Although his statistics may have outshined many of his comrades, Jones still entered without an offer from the Tigers. He hoped by Sunday, his fate would have turned.

“After the girls showed me around, I met up with coach [Sherman] Morris,” Jones said. “He showed me the weight room and the training room. It was all so amazing! Coach Morris was an awesome guy to talk to.  He said the coaches had not seen my video yet to offer me, so I handed him a copy there on the spot.

“He said they were going to look at it on Monday and then they would let me hear something.”

The Texas native currently holds offers from Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas State, Purdue, Missouri, Arizona and Stanford. However, Jones claimed no offer would be bigger than LSU.

“I thought the game was very entertaining,” Jones stated. “I was amazed by the atmosphere and how the players looked. The defensive end (Sam Montgomery) from South Carolina really stood out to me, and I thought the running backs did their thing on offense. I think I could definitely fit in at LSU.”

Before he could name LSU his favorite, Jones must first have an offer from the Tigers. But even without an offer, he still has LSU near the top.

“I was offered by Stanford on Monday and that was an honor, so I will be visiting there this summer,” Jones said. “I also plan on visiting Missouri and Arkansas in the middle of April. I want to get back down to LSU during the summer for a camp.

“Hopefully by then, I’ll have an offer,” he added. “LSU is one of my top schools right now. It’s the type of school I want to go to because it is in the SEC, which is my favorite conference.”
