Long Beach takes series from LSU

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Another game - another 10 strikeouts for a Long Beach pitcher.

The 49'ers clinched their series with LSU today thanks to Jered Weaver's performance on the mound that closely mirrored the one from teammate Abe Alvarez a night earlier.

Weaver (3-2) pitched 7.1 strong innings, striking out a season-high ten, as No. 9-ranked Long Beach State (10-4) beat LSU 5-1. Weaver's gem, combined with Abe Alvarez's 10 strikeouts on Friday, have given the Dirtbags their third series over a top-25 opponent.

LBSU has outscored LSU 17-2 in the series.

Weaver allowed four hits for the game and just one through the first five innings, retiring 13 in a row until a leadoff walk in the sixth. He walked one and struck out 10 or more batters for the second time in his career.

The Dirtbags struck first in the second inning with an RBI single from Troy Tulowitzki, one of three hits for the freshman on the day, to lead 1-0. LBSU went up 2-0 in the fourth when Tulowitzski came through again with an RBI single.

The 49ers would lead 3-0 on an RBI single from Sean Boatright, before scoring two more in the sixth to lead 5-1.

LSU's lone run came in the sixth off an RBI single from Ivan Naccarata, cutting the LBSU lead to 3-1. The Tigers dropped to 6-6 on the season.

The LSU-LBSU series concludes Sunday in the finale that starts at 3 p.m. (CST).
