A quarterback’s favorite target is not only someone who can catch, but someone that has the size to go up and snatch the ball when it is up for grabs. That kind of ability gives a quarterback the confidence he is looking for when the game is on the line.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and 192-pounds, Brooksville (Fla.) Nature Coast Tech product Ja’Juan Story has the size and the ability to do just that.
He proved it last season by hauling in 13 passes for 425 yards and four scores while adding another three interceptions and 22 tackles. His performance from his junior season was enough to grant Story over two dozen early offers heading into his senior year from the likes of LSU, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, North Carolina, Ohio State, Penn State, and others.
Part of the excitement for the three-star prospect has been the attention surrounding his spring practices over the past couple of weeks. College coaches from around the country have stopped by to observe the playmaker, but more importantly to make their presence known.
“About seven college coaches have come to my practices,” Story stated. “Coach [Billy] Gonzales from LSU was here last week. We couldn’t really talk, but it was cool knowing he was there watching me practice. That wasn’t the first time, though, because he has come to my school once before.”
Story admitted that is the kind of attention which has kept LSU in the mix for his signature. However, he claims LSU is just one of the many schools he is interested in including programs such as Miami, Florida State, Auburn, Kentucky, Louisville, Penn State, and Michigan State, among others.
“I haven’t done my research on LSU yet, but I know they always have a good team,” Story said. “I haven’t really been able to talk to the LSU coaches so that is one of the reasons I want to go down there for a visit so I can see stuff for myself. I know LSU is a team I’d consider playing for because I like their style of offense. I’m looking to play in more of a Pro Style offense than anything because that is what really prepares you for the NFL.”
According to Story, the type of offense will just be one of the components he will be looking for during his upcoming visits this summer.
“My uncle said he is going to take me on a road trip to visit some schools this summer,” Story added. “He is a coach and a teacher at my school so we’ll basically have the same schedule. I’d like to go visit Ohio State, Michigan, LSU, Florida, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, North Carolina, and Clemson. I’m not sure why these schools have my interest right not and I guess that is why I want to go see them to determine if I am interested in them or not. I just want to give everyone a fair chance before I eliminate anyone.
“I’m going to be looking at academics because I want to major in Sports Medicine,” Story concluded. “I’m also going to be talking to the coaches about playing time. I want to see who is going to be looking at my best interest in what I’m trying to do with football.”
