On his career at St. Aug….. “I was proud of my team and what we accomplished. I made a bunch of memories there, some good and some bad. There were a lot of lessons learned. Now I know what it takes to win and I know what it takes to lose too. I’ll take those lessons with me to LSU.”

On the recruiting process….. “I was surprised at the attention and I was excited at first. But, it kind of became boring after a while because I knew I was really just looking at one school, and that’s when I went ahead and committed to LSU.”

On choosing LSU….. “It felt like my home away from home. When I was down there visiting, there was a lot of chemistry between me and the players that were already on the team. I felt a lot of chemistry with the coaches too. They were behind me 100% the whole time.”

Favorite thing about LSU….. “Tradition. Even in New Orleans, LSU is big, and that was the most important thing for me.”

Of the schools recruiting him….. “Tennessee, Tulane, Texas Tech, Miami of Ohio, and a few others, but they weren’t really a match at all for LSU. I knew I was going to LSU the entire time.”

Best quality as a player….. “My reaction to the ball. I feel like a receiver. I feel like the quarterback is throwing the ball to me when I’m on the field, like he wants me to catch it.”

On off-season workouts….. “They’re going good. I’ve been doing a lot of drills. They are like the ones LSU does at practice. They are supposed to prepare me for when I come in to LSU during the summer. I will be a step ahead. Some of the drills are the same ones we do here at St. Aug, but they just have different names. I’ve been trying to finish the drills faster and faster. You want to try to finish the drills the same way you started.”

On Mathieu’s academic status….. “I’m qualified. It feels good, and I feel like I earned it. It was tough considering I kind of started off behind, and I had to play catch-up. I just finished my senior year, and I met every requirement needed to get into LSU. I scored a 20 on my ACT, and I’m currently waiting on my report card to get my official G.P.A., but in April, I know I had a 2.3.”

On moving up to Baton Rouge….. “First week of June.”
