Companioni named SEC Gymnast of the Week

LSU's Lauren Companioni was named the SEC Gymnast of the Week it was announced Wednesday by the conference office. It marks the first time Companioni has received the conference accolade and the first time this season a Tiger gymnast has been honored.

Companioni, a junior from Tampa, Fla., led the Tigers to a season-high
196.700 team score as they defeated SEC newcomer Arkansas (193.475) Friday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Competing in three events for LSU, Companioni won two event titles, taking home top honors on both the beam and floor exercise.

Companioni's meet-winning 9.925 on the beam was a career-best effort and
marked her second title of the season and the fourth of her career on the
event. She then matched her effort on the beam, dazzling the crowd with a
second 9.925 on the floor exercise. Companioni's score marked a season high and earned her her first floor title of the year.

The LSU gymnastics team returns to action Friday when it welcomes No. 5
Georgia to the PMAC for the final home meet of the 2003 season. The meet
will begin at 7 p.m. (CST).
