"This is a very important weekend for us," said LSU head track and field coach Pat Henry. "It is our last chance to qualify additional athletes into the national championships and there are definitely certain areas that we are looking to improve in."
Teams also vying for births to the national championships at the meet include Texas, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma and TCU among others.
In addition to the LSU Last Chance Meet, Coach Henry will also be sending
select athletes to the Last Chance Meet in Ames, Iowa.
"We are sending our athletes to the locations that we feel are the most
conducive to them achieving NCAA automatic qualifying marks," said Henry.
Half-milers Neisha Bernard-Thomas, Marlon Greensword and Jeffrey Fisher will all make one last effort to earn a spot at the national meet, running in Ames, Iowa. They will be joined by sprinter Pete Coley who looks to better his time in the 400 meters.
As it stands the top-ranked Lady Tigers and the fifth-ranked Tigers are already in decent shape heading into next weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships, as the two teams have combined to post 13 automatic qualifying marks and 17 additional provisional qualifying times.
The 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships will be held at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., next Friday and Saturday, March 14-15. The Lady Tigers enter the meet as the defending national champions, while the Tigers finished fourth a year ago.
