Toney has nation's best long jump

Nicole Toney took the national lead in the triple jump at the LSU Last Chance Meet Friday night, highlighting a successful day of performances by the Tiger track and field team at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.

Toney's jump of 44 feet, 5 1/2 inches marked a season-best effort and currently leads the nation by just over an inch. Ashley Gardner also improved upon her season best in the event, posting a distance of 41-5 1/4.

Katie McKeever recorded an improvement of over two feet in the shot put,
throwing for a distance of 52-0 3/4. Her mark ties for the 18th best in the
nation to date and may qualify her into the NCAA Championships next week.

Also moving up in the nation ranks was junior Lolo Jones. She clocked a
personal-best time of 7.32 seconds in the 60-meter dash to win the event and move into a tie for ninth in the national standings.

On the men's side both Ben Broussard and Gabriel Caraway turned in
season-best marks in the pole vault, clearing 15-11.

Anthony Ewers also improved his time in the 200 meters, taking first with a
season-best time of 21.82.

LSU will attempt to get improve on a few last performances before next
week's NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., as Pete Coley, Marlin
Greensward, Jeffrey Fisher and Geisha Bernard-Thomas all compete tomorrow at the Last Chance Meet in Ames, Iowa.
