“I guess an offer was in the back of my mind, but I was really just down there to put my game in front of the coaches,” Turner said. “I was kind of shocked when everything played out like it did. By the end of the day I was in a private sit down with (Les) Miles, and he offered right there on the spot.
“We discussed some things about LSU’s history and what they’ve been able to do with guys from West Monroe. It was a really good feel. I told him that LSU would be a really great spot for me.”
Upon arrival to camp, Turner – a 5-foot-11, 185-pound rising senior – laid down a pair of sub-4.5 times (4.46 and 4.48). From there the staff worked him with Ron Cooper and the defensive backs. Cooper later passed Turner onto Billy Gonzales and the wide receiver group.
“They said that they liked me at both receiver and defensive back, but they wanted to bring me on as a receiver because I’ve got such strong hands and I can move quick and create space,” Turner said. “Most schools are being specific with where they want me, and LSU seems like they are going to stick with the receiver angle.
“I don’t really mind either way. I’m just looking to see the field and help the team win.”
Turner, a 4.0 student who lined up at quarterback, running back and receiver, led West Monroe to a 5A state championship, a deep run into the playoffs that helped get his name out to college coaches across the map.
“The offer brings me to 10 total scholarships,” he said. “The people showing me the most love are Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Tennessee. I feel like now LSU is going to be in that group, as well.”
As for a decision date, Turner said that discussions with his father have led him to tread cautiously.
“I’m not trying to get caught up in everything and then commit and regret it,” Turner said. “My dad and I decided that it would be best to feel everyone out. I’ll probably take a couple of visits and make sure my head is in the right place.
“The LSU offer definitely shakes things up for me. It kind of broadens your horizon. I’m really happy with where I am at.”
