Where will LSU turn to solve their dilemma at quarterback?
It’s the burning question around water coolers in Louisiana, and what makes the situation even tighter is that the Tigers are looking to land a big name late in the game – always a tough task given the quarterback dominos typically begin to fall sooner than any other position.
Of the nation’s top-25 passers, just four quarterbacks – Brett Hundley, Jacoby Brissett, Jones and Adam Pittser – remain uncommitted. While Hundley and Brissett have long been targets of the staff, Jones picked up his offer from the Tigers within the past month.
“They just sent it up here a few weeks ago, and it definitely came as a surprise,” Jones said. “They had been in contact with my head coach (Ted Ginn Sr.), and he let me know right when the news came in. It was definitely a big scholarship to get. I know LSU’s a top-tier program.”
Jones has already picked up overtures from double-digit schools, and the Glenville High standout feels that other programs – namely Ohio State – are on the brink of pulling the trigger. Where does LSU, the latest school to offer, fit into the picture?
“It’s all still fresh, but the one thing that really stands out is the fact that I could come in and play really early,” he said. “I know that they have lost two quarterbacks since the summer, and that means that with their older guys I could come in and compete for the starting job a year after I get there. Not many other places have that sort of situation.”
Jones, a three-star prospect, said that he plans to narrow his list soon, and from there he will begin to set up his five official visits for the fall. From where things stand now, the trips won’t come until the back end of his senior season.
“I am trying to get most of my games out of the way, so I’ll probably take them near the end of the year,” Jones said. “I hadn’t even thought about where I want to go, but LSU will be in the discussion. I just have to sit down and sort it all out.”
The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder finished his junior season with over 2,500 yards passing and 23 touchdowns. He also rushed for over 500 yards and six touchdowns.
