Tigers begin spring practice

The LSU football team began spring practice with its first team workout Monday.

The main chore in front of the Tigers coaching staff is finding replacements for starters on the 2002 team.

With spring practice falling earlier than in recent years for LSU, the Tigers are not 100 percent in terms of the health of its players. Eleven players wore red no-contact jerseys at Monday's practice, including all four quarterbacks.

Wide receivers Devery Henderson and Blain Bech both sported red, and Henderson still had a cast on the right arm he broke against Ole Miss.

Randall Gay (shoulder), Ben Wilkerson (back), Marquise Hill (shoulder), Torran Williams (knee) and reserve offensive lineman Mario Loiacono also were kept out of contact.

Some notes and observations on the practice:

- Matt Mauck moved around well on his injured foot, and threw some crisp passes. He showed no hesitation in his pass-drops.

- At linebacker, Lionel Turner worked at the "Mike" position, with Cameron Vaughn on the weak side and Alonzo Manuel at "Sam."

- During a sideline passing drill, a Marcus Randall pass sailed high, and Skyler Green ran into the mechanized lift that the film recorders use to tape practice trying to catch it. Green banged his knee, but went back to practice and showed no ill effects.

- Amongst the quarterbacks, Lester Ricard appeared to be much improved. He looked very comfortable dropping back, and had excellent zip on his passes.
