Overall impressions…

“I think we played a decent game. The first half we played very dominant football, and in the second half we came out and gave up two or three long passes. T.J. Yates did a great job getting the ball down the field to his receivers. He’s a solid quarterback and he came out and performed and gave us a challenge.”

The youth on the defensive side…

“They stepped up. Kevin Minter, Stefoin Francois and Tyrann Mathieu, they stepped up big time … I think they can definitely be better, but they showed some good things tonight.”

The reason things went south in the second half…

“Corners biting on double moves and safeties biting for double moves. We are in coverages where a guy has his eye where it isn’t supposed to be. Don’t bite on the double moves and that game is totally different.”

Sheppard’s message to the team on the final drive…

“I told the defense that we couldn’t let what happened last year happen this year. We were leading every game going into the fourth quarter except for one, which was the Florida game. If we would have carried out all those games as a defense, we could have been in Pasadena.”

On the game stats…

“It’s no indication of how our secondary played overall because of the big plays. The mistakes our defense made are easily corrected. If we just correct a few things, we are going to be a great team.”

On the defensive line…

“The D-line did a tremendous job. We went out and controlled the line of scrimmage. We just had our eyes in the wrong place on a couple of plays.”
