The Marquette Golden Eagles will look to build on its recent success when it takes on the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders Tuesday night at the Bradley Center. Fresh off a 96-65 win over Longwood on Saturday in which sophomore Chris Otule went for a career-high 19 points, Marquette will attempt to win its third game in a row.
The Islanders have won just three of its first eight games to begin the season, but there's no denying they will be ready when they face Marquette due to past competition. They have already traveled to Oklahoma State and Kansas this year, two of the toughest places in the country to play, and suffered a loss at home to the Texas A&M Aggies. Here's a look at some of the key players for the Islanders.
Demond Watt (16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.3 blocks): The senior from Chicago could give the Marquette frontcourt all it can handle Tuesday night. He has somewhat disappeared against better competition this season, but he did manage 21 points and 16 rebounds against the Aggies. At 6-feet, 7-inches, Chris Otule and Jae Crowder will need to bring their "A" games on defense.
Terence Jones ( 10.0 points, 1.6 assists, 1.4 steals): Marquette's struggle with three points defense could be the answer the Islanders are looking for on offense. Jones poured in five threes against Oklahoma State and as a streaky shooter, could provide instant offense if he has the hot hand. He doesn't do much else and is turnover prone but if he gets hot from beyond the arc, look out.
Texas A&M Corpus Christi Game Notes:
--The Islanders rank 320th in the NCAA with just 10.1 assists per game.
--Senior Justin Reynolds has been hot of late, scoring in double digits his last three contests after doing so just once in the team's first five games. He is averaging 12.7 points per game over that span and is just 20 points away from reaching 1,000 for his career.
--According to Ken Pomeroy, the Islanders have played the eighth toughest schedule in the country and still have dates with Memphis and Texas Tech left, in addition to Tuesday night's game.
--The Islanders actually hold a winning record all-time against the Big East, defeating South Florida twice on neutral courts and falling to Depaul.
--Tuesday night will be Texas A&M Corpus Christi's first game ever played in the state of Wisconsin.
