Efficiency Ratings: Game 2

Using the NBA Efficiency Rating Formula, MarquetteHoops tracks the best statistical performances of the season.

A quick way NBA coaches measure a player's game performance is by evaluating his efficiency. In order to find a player's efficiency the following formula is used: ((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field Goals Att. - Field Goals Made) + (Free Throws Att. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers)).

For example, compare the following stat lines:
Player A: 17 points (5-of-22 FG, 7-9 FT), 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, 4 turnovers.
Player B: 15 points (5-8 FG, 3-4 FT), 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 turnovers

Who had the better game? Using the NBA formula player B, who hit five of eight shots and committed two turnovers registered a +20 efficiency total while Player A who missed 17 shots and had four turnovers had just a +11 rating.
LATEST GAME

Norfolk State provided much stiffer competition than Mount St. Mary's but even so, Marquette was able to continue to force turnovers and convert them into points. The two-headed monster of Jae Crowder and Darius Johnson-Odom powered the MU offense with 25 and 24 points, respectively. Vander Blue played another solid all around game and MU received increased contributions from sophomore Jamil Wilson and freshman Todd Mayo.

vs. Norfolk State
(change from previous game)

Per Minute Efficiency
  • Jae Crowder 1.167
  • Jamil Wilson 0.938
  • Todd Mayo 0.867
  • Darius Johnson-Odom 0.806
  • Vander Blue 0.643
  • Derrick Wilson 0.444
  • Davante Gardner 0.417
  • Chris Otule 0.385
  • Junior Cadougan 0.136
  • Jamail Jones 0.067

Notes: As good as Jae Crowder was on Friday, he was even better on Monday night as he posted an impressive stat line of 25 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in just 30 minutes of play. Crowder continues to excel at both ends of the floor and it was nice to see him make a concerted effort on the boards. Both Jamil Wilson and Todd Mayo looked more comfortable on the floor and as a result played more efficiently. Chris Otule and Davante Gardner played limited minutes, mainly due to their success against Norfolk State big man Kyle O'Quinn. With O'Quinn out of the game with foul trouble, Gardner and Otule had difficulty guarding his smaller and quicker replacements.
