MU hangs on for 49-48 win over GTown

Marquette pulls out another nail biting win this week by defeating Georgetown 50-48 on Saturday at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in front of a rowdy crowd of 15,433.

The game came right down to the wire as Georgetown's Greg Whittington got fouled on a 3-pointer in the corner by Marquette's Trent Lockett. Whittington made the first two free-throws, but back rimmed the final free-throw as Lockett grabbed the rebound to seal the win.

Vander Blue and Davante Gardner each scored a team-high 12 points a piece to lead Marquette to a 11-3 overall record and 2-0 mark in the Big East Conference thus far.

Georgetown was led by Markel Starks who scored 18 points to pace the Hoyas. Otto Porter and Greg Whittington each chipped in 13 points themselves too.

It was a rough first half for both teams as Marquette held a slight 21-20 advantage heading into the break as Marquette shot 25.9% from the field compared to Georgetown who had a slightly higher shooting percentage at 34.6%.

Georgetown didn't get much contribution from their bench today not scoring a single point compared to Marquette who added 16. Marquette's intensity and hustle paid off as they were all over the court diving for loose balls and led the rebounding margin 35-26 which proved to be a key factor in the game.

Marquette has a week off before traveling to Pittsburgh on Saturday January 12th for a 11 a.m. matchup.
