Matt Heldt is much improved

Last week I had the opportunity to see Neenah's Matt Heldt, the 6’9” 240 lb. post player who signed with Coach Wojciechowski’s top 5 rated recruiting class last Nov. Matt and his Rockets team were in Mequon playing at the WBBY/Mark Miller Shootout. They lost 67-63 to defending State Champion Germantown.

It was a rematch of the WIAA Tourney game played last March. Heldt more than held his own in a physical game where Germantown had difficulty matching up with him down low. Held finished with 28 pts, rebounded and ran the court well.

Here is my post game interview with him.[Part 1]

John Dodds: Big game against Germantown. It was a disappointing loss obviously but you really battled them.

Matt Heldt: "It is always tough to come away with a loss but I cannot be sad the way our team played. We were down eight but put so much effort into crawling back to get within three. It is never good to lose but we learned a lot from this game."

John Dodds: In the game, you had 28 points but it was a quiet 28. You did it within the flow of the game and that was impressive.

[Heldt #31 was open on over the top passes into the post vs Germantown]

Matt Heldt: "I am never a guy who is going to look just to get his own (shot). They (Germantown) were giving me over the top looks. And my teammates know how to hit me. They threw it in where I just had to turn around and score. I never try to go off and get as many points as I can. I’ll do whatever my team needs me to do."

John Dodds: Neenah Coach Bjork said you were battling the flu last week.

Matt Heldt: "Yes, over the Christmas break. I had the flu which was unfortunate but I am feeling a lot better now."

John Dodds: What part of your game are you working on? Post moves? 3 point shooting? Anything particular or just trying to get stronger for next year?

Matt Heldt: "Definitely try to get stronger. Moving up to college basketball is a big step especially for post players, especially the physicalness. I want to get stronger and more explosive and becoming a better rebounder and finishing strong under the basket and finish through contact."

John Dodds: How tall are you and how much do you weigh?

Matt Heldt: "I am 6’9" and I weigh around 240. I was up to 245 but went down to 235 (flu), but I am back up to 240 now.":

part 2 of the interview will be posted this weekend.
