Fans Select Dwyane Wade Over Butch Lee

Many of the fans that voted for Dwyane Wade visit MarquetteHoops.com to read about last night's game, preview the next game or to get a scoop on the hottest recruits. Those fans are not alone as they are joined by the one they voted as the all-time greatest, "I do look at the website, I am always keeping up with Marquette" said Wade.

The Marquette faithful have spoken and have named current Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade as their favorite player to ever wear the blue and gold in a tournament known as Marquette Madness. The tournament was the brainchild of one of MarquetteHoops.com's more avid posters who goes by the name of "MU Viking." Modeled along the lines of the NCAA tournament, Marquette Madness started off with a field of 65 players, seeded 1-16 in four regions. The fans voted game by game and eventually named Wade as their all time favorite, giving him the title over Butch Lee. George Thompson and Bo Ellis were the other two to advance to the Final Four.

The tournament brought back many of the great names that played for Marquette, players like Lloyd Walton, Earl Tatum, John Glaser, Marc Marotta and Rocke Calvelli. Upon receiving news that he was the fans selection as the best in MU history, Wade responded, "Butch Lee was a great player. Doc Rivers was a great player. You know there are many great players that have come out of Marquette. Still being young, any time my name gets mentioned with those players, it is an honor for me."

When MUViking brought the idea of the tournament to MarquetteHoops.com, his intention wasn't really to determine the best player of all time, he had other reasons; "Marquette basketball has a rich and illustrious history. Although I am a young alum and fan of the program and have only seen the past decade of Marquette hoops, I recognized that other alums and fans have a great sense of pride in that history. I felt like Marquette Madness would be a terrific way to create discussion and debate among fans of the program, and really get folks to talk about the relative merits of various players. After researching the stats and reading the stories, I learned a great deal about Marquette history, and I found this whole process to be a very enjoyable one."

Many people participated in the tournament. There were several close matchups that typically had the younger players winning out over the older players, but in a way, that is a good sign. It shows that there is a very strong group of younger fans that believe in Marquette basketball as much as people did in Marquette's glory days of the '60s & ‘70s.

MUViking was happy with the voter turnout, "There are a core group of fans who visit this message board, and I felt the contest was well received by many of them." Many of the fans that voted for Dwyane Wade come to the MarquetteHoops.com website for a variety of reasons. Some want to read about last night's game, preview the next game or to get a scoop on the hottest recruits, and those fans are not alone. They are joined by the one they voted as the all-time greatest, "I do look at the website, I am always keeping up with Marquette" said Wade.

"As for the result, I can't say I disagree with it" said MUViking. I voted for Butch Lee based on stats, years of service, and the fact that he brought home a title. But Dwyane Wade is easily the best college basketball player I've ever seen in person, and he is a wonderful person to hold up as the best ever at Marquette. I can't complain."

Another poster from New York, known as "TheReptile", was also very happy with the tournament. "There were players that I knew were good, but it was great hearing older fans tell stories about them, and to read their stats – wow!" I really learned a great deal about the history of Marquette basketball just by reading the many posts."

Overall the tournament was a great success. It brought many of the younger MU fans in touch with players from long ago, and gave the older fans an appreciation of how the younger fans view the program. It showed us that the Marquette basketball program not only has a remarkable history, but a very strong, diverse and loyal fan base that will help Tom Crean, Bill Cords, Fr. Wild and Marquette University carry the team into the Big East.
