Dwight Burke, a 6-foot-8 power forward out of Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict's, once committed to East Carolina, is now going to Marquette where he'll play in the Big East.
St. Benedict's head coach Dan Hurley said that South Florida, Pittsburgh, Rhode Island and St. Louis were interested.
"He picked them because they'll coach the hell out him," Hurley said. "He's a basketball coach; he's going to coach him everyday and that's what the kid needs."
Burke is Marquette's second signee of the week. Earlier they nabbed Jamil Lott, a junior college post player.
Burke talked with the Pirates but really his hook with them was from the previous staff.
Hurley likes what Burke has to offer.
"He's a late bloomer type that really started to play well late. He averaged a double-double the last 8 games of the year. He showed great progress late. He's a guy who's got some real upside. He's a little raw because he's only been here for one year. He's going to keep getting better and he's going to play for them."
WIth Marquette transitioning to the Big East, landing one of Hurley's kids is a good idea. St. Benedict's is and will be stocked with prospects in the coming years and this could be a fertile recruiting area that could potentially open up to the Golden Eagles following the move to the Big East.
