Coming off of impressive victories in the CBE tournament and on the road at Valpo, MU now sets their sights on winning the Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic at the Bradley Center this weekend. Andrew Phillips of MarquetteHoops.com takes a look at the teams in this preview....

Northwestern State University:

Location: Natchitoches, Louisiana

Mascot: Demons

Conference: Southland Conference

Current Record: 4-2

2005-2006 Record: 26-8 (14-1), SLC Regular Season and Tournament Champions, NCAA Appearance (defeated Iowa in the first round before losing to West Virginia)

Head Coach: Mike McConathy is in his 8th season with NSU, having coached them to a 116-104 record.  Has a career record of 468-263.

Series History with Marquette: Marquette has never faced NSU

Other items of note: NSU boasts the nation's 7th longest home court winning streak at 16 straight games

 

Probable Starting Line-up:

#12 Luke Rogers, a 6'1" senior guard from Chicago, IL, pre-season 2nd team all SLC, averaging 13.8 ppg, 4.8 apg, and 2.8 spg while shooting 38% from beyond the arc, was honorable mention all-SLC last season, most likely match up: James or McNeal

 

#21 Kennan Jones, a 6'3" senior guard from Opelousas, LA, averaging 7.4 ppg on 47% shooting from the field, and an astounding 8.4 apg, has 310 career assists, most likely match up: James

 

#33 Colby Bargeman, a 6'5" junior forward from Lafayette, LA, averaging 14.8 ppg on 67% shooting from the field and 58% shooting from beyond the arc on 10 for 17 shooting (considerably higher than his 33% and 26% performances the last two years), also averaging 4.6 rpg, had a career high 24 points at Louisville earlier this season, most likely match up: Matthews or McNeal depending on shooting performance

 

#13 Gerrell Thomas, a 6'6" junior forward from Oklahoma City, OK, JUCO transfer from Redlands CC is averaging 3.6 ppg on 26% shooting and 2.6 rpg, most likely match up: Lott

Head Coach: Joe Scott, currently in his 3rd season with Princeton, has led the Tigers to a 31-29 record, has an 81-92 career record in 7 years of overall coaching

Series History with Marquette: Marquette lost its previous and only meeting with Princeton

Other items of note: Princeton has attempted 74 free throws compared to 55 for their opponents this season

#21 Marcus Schroeder, a 6'2" freshman guard from Concord, CA, averaging 5.8 ppg on 29% shooting and 4.3 apg

 

#22 Lincoln Gunn, a 6'3" freshman guard from Orinda, CA, averaging 5.8 ppg on 31% shooting and 1.3 apg

 

#33 Justin Conway, a 6'4" freshman forward from Santa Fe, NM, averaging 10.5 ppg on 57% shooting, including 5 of 6 from beyond the arc, also averaging 4.5 rpg  and 2.0 apg, team captain

 

#20 Luke Owings, a 6'6" senior forward from Hyattsville, MD, averaging 7.5 ppg on 45% shooting and 37% from beyond the arc, and 3.5 rpg

 

#4 Kyle Koncz, a 6'7" junior forward from Strongsville, OH, averaging 14.5 ppg on 54% shooting including 54% from beyond the arc (13/24), averages 2.0 rpg, named to BCA Classic All-Tournament Team

 

 

 

 

North Dakota State University

Location: Fargo, ND

Mascot: Bison

Conference: Independent

Current Record: 3-2

2005-2006 Record: 16-12

Head Coach: Tim Miles, in his 6th season with the Bison, has an 82-65 record, and a 195-126 career record in 12 years of coaching

Series History with Marquette: Marquette has won all 3 previous meetings with NDSU

Other items of note: NDSU defeated Marquette's in-state rival Wisconsin last season in what was considered by many the biggest upset of 2005-2006. NDSU recently became a division one school.

 

Probable Starters:

#31 Mike Nelson, a 6'4" sophomore guard from Madison, WI, averaging 17.4 ppg on 57% shooting including 47% from beyond the arc, is also averaging 3.6 rpg, was a high school teammate of Wesley Matthews, coming off a career high 29 points against UWGB

 

#32 Josh Vaughn, a 6'4" red shirt freshman guard from Braham, MN, averaging 1.0 ppg and will be making his first start Friday night against Princeton due to the absence of Ben Woodside who is questionable with an ankle injury

 

#22 Brett Winkelman, a 6'6" sophomore forward from Morris, MN, averaging 17.8 ppg and 6.8 rpg on 51.8% shooting, was honorable mention all-independent team last season

 

#44 Andre Smith, a 6'8" senior forward from St. Paul, MN, averaging 18.8 ppg on 52% shooting, also averaging 10.4 rpg, was a teammate of Jamil Lott at NDSCS

 

#40 Lucas Moormann, a 6'9" sophomore center from Dickinson, ND, averaging 6.6 ppg on 40% shooting, also averaging 7.6 rpg, but is only shooting 33% from the line

 

**Possible Change would be replace Josh Vaughn with Ben Woodside, a guard who is averaging 10.2 ppg and 5.2 apg, but rolled his ankle against UWGB and is questionable for Friday nights contest against Princeton .
