Majerus says the competing styles of the West Virginia versus Marquette match-up will interest him. He said, "It will be an interesting battle of strengths. Marquette competes on defense with energy and effort toward any loose ball. Marquette's style might play directly into the hands of West Virginia. West Virginia has five players who can hit the three ball. They use the three point threat to create spacing and back door opportunities. Against a team like West Virginia, you pick your poison. Do you put pressure on the ball to take away the three point shot or do you back away to take way the back door passes?"
Majerus said that it is very difficult to prepare for West Virginia in two days. Coach John Beilein has a unique 1-3-1 offense which features the three ball and back door pass. Spacing on the floor is key. They are lead by Frank Young who is the only returning starter from last year. Young averages 14.5 points per game. 6' 8" forward Joe Alexander is the power forward and a good three-point shooter. Majerus said, "Beilein recruits players who are good shooters and good decision makers. All his recruits can shoot the three ball."
Majerus said that Daris Nickels is a small forward who takes very good care of the ball. West Virginia has a very good assist-to-turnover ratio. Guard Alex Ruoff is quick and will probably be guarding James.
Looking at the Marquette Golden Eagles, Majerus said that his favorite player is Jerel McNeal. "I really like the way he tries so hard. His effort on defense: he is a top defender, rebounder and driver. He is very difficult to beat on defense as he has quick feet and is able to square up any driving defender."
"Ouzmane Barro is a terrific kid. He has been doing a nice job on the rebound, especially on the inside out rebound under the rim."
Majerus added that Dominic James might have lost a little confidence. "Last year he was the hunter, now he is the hunted. You cannot rely on your big brother upper classmen like Joe Chapman who is great at getting a hockey assist. Making the key pass to the player who makes the key pass for the assist."
Majerus on the Wisconsin Badgers' team. Majerus said the secret to Wisconsin's success is being old. Tucker and Chapman are 23 --- Taylor is a 22-year-old senior guard and key people have told him that Flowers is such a great athlete he would be an ideal NFL cornerback. Plus they have red shirted Butch, the McDonald's All American, so you have a veteran team. He said the best player on the team is Travon Hughes. He can play at different speeds and he is athletic enough to stay with Dominic James in a game against Wisconsin.
