McNeal's Steal & Basket Beats USF, 70-68

Jerel McNeal's steal, 50 foot dribble drive and banker beat both the buzzer and South Florida, 70-68. Dominic James had tied the game at 66 with a strong lane jumper with 15 seconds to go. Commenting on the last second heroics, MU coach Tom Crean said, "It turned out to be one of the most dramatic finishes that I have ever been apart of." Here are more post game quotes from McSteal.....

Question: After James tied the game with a great driving shot SF called Time out…

"At the TO I knew that there was 9 sec left…I guarded Verdejo…but me and Wes switched…then they tried a flair screen…I knew they would go to Buckley….after I jumped out and stole the ball.…I was doing an estimate in my head[as far as how much time I had left to go for a lay up…I did not want to turn the ball over at the end of the game…as I got deeper in lane I went up for the shot…

Question: MU defense

We were switching up…we would take a big on a small…we tell our bigs to get your hands up….No one prepares for as many end of the game type situations in practice as we do…"down 5 with a min to go"… "down by 3 with 30 sec left" …this is a tribute to coach and the staff we prepare for many end of game situations at practice…

Question: What were you thinking after the steal?

I was getting close to a lay up.. I was probing it (left and right)…I thought about getting it to Dominic to get easy lay-up…the defender committed to me so I went up high …I wanted to drift to the side to elevate straight up and down…you don't let the ref …make a charging call (at the end of a game)…it was one of those times where coach says I have a 'chaotic mind'…

Question: Comment about James big bucket to tie the game at 68 with 15 sec left

"Dominic James drive…he took contact…went up strong…tied the game up…(in the huddle after SF timeout) ‘At the Timeout, I told Dominic to just pressure the ball…a team like this (without a lot of end of the game experience) might be a little more timid…DJ pressured the ball and I was able to make the play…

Question: On Fouling out 6-9 Kentrall Gransberry (his reboound and putback drew the 5th foul on Gransberry.)

Coaches told me to keep crashing the glass…

Question: On So Florida's McHugh Mattis

"Mattis…is a great athlete…we did not underestimate them ..they were jacked up …after there big win vs Rutgers…

Question:On your Steals…do they result mostly from your guy…or others passing to your guy?

"I get a lot of steals on (defensive) rotations…but it is all about about my teammates …today it was DJ's ball pressure…all the steals and accolades I get…it is all about the team…."

Oh what a feeling!!
