Marquette to Take on St. John's

The Marquette Golden Eagles head into Madison Square Garden to take on St,John's in the first round of the Big East Tournament. Th egame will be televised on Wednesday at 8:00pm CST and will be televised on ESPN. Andrew Phillips gives us a look at the key players for the Red Storm...

All-time series with Marquette: This is the 13th time Marquette will face SJU with MU holding a 7-5 advantage including 2 consecutive victories in the last two meetings. 

Interesting notes: St. John's will be without Lamont Hamilton and is appearing in its first Big East Tournament since 2003.    

Coach: Norm Roberts, has achieved a 37-47 record in his third season at SJU. 


Probable Starters:

#4 Eugene Lawrence: a 6'1" junior guard from Brooklyn, NY.  Averaging 7.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg, and 5.36 apg on 39.5% shooting from the field (68-172) and 38.1% shooting from beyond the arc (37-97).  Leads SJU in turnovers with 120 (4.0 per game) and steals with 53. 


#15 Avery Patterson: a 6'4" junior guard from Kannapolis, NC.  Averaging 10.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, and 1.1 apg on 35.7% shooting from the field (109-305) and 32.7% from beyond the arc (71-217).  Is a 71.4% shooter from the line, has attempted 100 more three pointers than the next closest member of the team. 


#1 Qa'rraan Calhoun: a 6'8" freshman forward from Hazlet, NJ.  Averaging 5.8 ppg, 4.0 rpg and .43 apg on 41.1% shooting from the field (60-146) and 31.9% from beyond the arc (15-47).  Has only 13 assists on the season and is a 64% free throw shooter. 


#2 Anthony Mason, Jr.: a 6'7" sophomore forward from Memphis, TN.  Averaging 11.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg, and 2.0 apg on 41.5% shooting from the field (127-306) and 32.5% from beyond the arc (37-114).  Leads the starters in personal fouls committed with 74 and is 2nd in turnovers (67) and blocked shots (18). 


#40 Aaron Spears: a 6'10" senior forward from Chicago, IL.  Averaging 4.0 ppg and 2.6 rpg on 50.0% shooting from the field (46-92).  Is the replacement for injured Lamont Hamilton who averages 13.4 ppg and 6.5 rpg, so he has big shoes to fill. 


Key Reserve:

#5 Larry Wright: a 6'2" freshman guard from the Saginaw, MI.  Averaging 3.8 ppg, 1.1 rpg, and .5 apg on 35.4% shooting from the field (35-99), and 42.6% from beyond the arc (23-54).
