Tale of the Tape, A look at MSU's Key Players

Marquette will take on Michigan State in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Here is a look at the starting line up for Tom Izzo's Michigan State Spartans....

All-time series with Marquette: This is the 54th meeting between Marquette and Michigan State, with MSU holding a 30-23 advantage in the series.  The last time the two teams played was in the 1959 NCAA Tournament in Raleigh, NC, MSU was victorious in this game. 

Interesting notes: MU Coach Tom Crean was an assistant coach at Michigan State under current Head Coach, Tom Izzo before coming to Marquette, former Marquette assistant Dwayne Stephens is an assistant for Izzo currently.    

Coach: Tom Izzo, in his 13th year at MSU, has won a national championship and has reached four Final Fours.  Also boasts a career 255-109 record, but has yet to face former assistant and good friend, Tom Crean. 


Probable Starters:

#11 Drew Neitzel: a 6'0" junior guard from Grand Rapids, MI.  Averaging 18.1 ppg, 2.8 rpg, and 4.3 apg on 43.4% shooting from the field (186-429) and 41.7% shooting from beyond the arc (106-254).  Leads MSU in free throw percentage at 88.1% (119-135), as attempted more than 100 three pointers than the next closest member of his team.   


#5 Travis Walton: a 6'2" sophomore guard from Lima, OH.  Averaging 6.6 ppg, 2.6 rpg, and 5.5 apg on 45.0% shooting from the field (72-160) and 33.3% from beyond the arc (13-39).  Is a 79.5% shooter from the line, leads MSU in steals with 37 and is second in turnovers with 82, but has an assist to turnover ratio of 2.21:1. 


#2 Raymar Morgan: a 6'7" freshman forward from Canton, OH.  Averaging 11.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 0.9 apg on 49.1% shooting from the field (113-230) and 26.7% from beyond the arc (4-15).  Has only 23 assists on the season and is a 64.6% free throw shooter. 


#41 Marquise Gray: a 6'10" sophomore forward from Flint, MI.  Averaging 6.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg, and 0.5 apg on 56.8% shooting from the field (88-155).  Leads the starters in personal fouls committed with 87. 


#34 Drew Naymick: a 6'10" junior center from Muskegon, MI.  Averaging 3.8 ppg and 3.8 rpg on 47.9% shooting from the field (45-94).  Leads the team in blocked shots with 54, and leads the team with 94 personal fouls. 


Key Reserve:

#14 Goran Suton: a 6'10" sophomore center from Lansing, MI.  Averaging 9.5 ppg, and 6.8 rpg, on 51.0% shooting from the field (131-257), and 0.0% from beyond the arc (0-5), also leads the team in turnovers with 88, but has 78 assists.
