"It's great for the program and I am really happy for Trevor," head coach Tom Crean said. "He's done a great job of staying focused during the entire process, not knowing when he was next going to be able to do something he loves."
Mbakwe's addition to the court comes just in time for the start of preseason practice, which begins Friday night. The Golden Eagles are slated to host "Marquette Madness" Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Al McGuire Center, giving MU fans an opportunity to see the 6-7, 240-pounder in game action.
"Finally," said Mbakwe. "It was definitely tough, not being able to participate in all of the team activities, but my teammates really helped me stay upbeat and get through it as best I could."
Mbakwe was ranked among the top prospects in the nation as a senior at St. Bernard's High School in St. Paul, Minn. He averaged 21.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game in his final season, helping the team to a 32-1 record.
