Marquette's head coach Buzz Williams called two timeouts to set up a play with 12 seconds left. "We ran a sideline out of bounds play to get the ball to Jimmy....[the plan was for him to hand it ]to DJO, then he was to give the ball back to Jimmy...to run a little clock..but the spacing got skewed ..but we knew that #33[Gavin Edwards] was going to be guarding him."
"Our guys were really excited this morning at the shoot around. They were deserving of the win but we do still have a losing record[Marquette 13-8, 4-5 in Big East]," said Williams. }I have always thought that we will be better than fine but I don't know when. But it is trending that way."
On the post game radio show, Williams said about Johnson-Odom's FTs, "DJO is the worst FT shooter in The Big East and for him to make three to tie, that is a real confidence builder."
Marquette which leads the nation in 3-point shooting, ended up hitting 9 of 24 shots from behind the arc.
Marquette picked up its first win in six true road games this season. It had beaten Xavier and Michigan on nuetral floors. It was the first road victory over a ranked opponent in three years.
Connecticut outrebounded Marquette 41-18 but the Golden Eagles had only two turnovers compared to 16 for UConn.
