Gardner Pops For Marquette

The guys up at Marquette watched the development of Miami center Reggie Johnson closely. The big man was a project coming out of high school. He had a state championship in his dossier and good hands and feet. What he was missing was conditioning.

As his redshirt freshman season progressed, so did Johnson's game. By year's end, it was clear Johnson would be able to help the Hurricanes going forward.

Enter Davante Gardner. The 6-foot-9, 300 pounder out of Kings Fork in Virginia is a lot like Johnson and has a similar ceiling. He was part of a state title team as a junior and went for 20+ points a game as a senior.

Marquette and South Florida were his final choices. He visited Marquette during the season.

"I like the style of play that Marquette plays," Gardner told Scout.com.

Time will tell but Gardner's a fine late pickup at the center position and a guy Buzz Williams should be glad he signed a year from now.
