Lamel Matthews Talks Herd

It was fourteen years ago that Marshall coaches ran across a young gunslinger in Washington, D.C. by the name of Byron Leftwich. Leftwich would sign with the Herd and then go on to put up monster numbers and ultimately be drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It was fourteen years ago that Marshall coaches ran across a young gunslinger in Washington, D.C. by the name of Byron Leftwich. Leftwich would sign with the Herd and then go on to put up monster numbers and ultimately be drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Now we flash forward to 2012. Another young quarterback from Washington, D.C. area Dunbar High School named Lamel Matthews. Recently, I caught up with the 2013 prospect and asked him a few questions.

The obvious first question to ask had to be about Leftwich. Matthews doesn't only know who Leftwich is and all about him, but he grew up in the same neighborhood as Byron. He has also followed Leftwich on his journey through Marshall and the NFL and considers himself a fan and admirer of what he has accomplished coming from his neighborhood.

Matthews thought a little about what it was like when he got that first offer and realized that all of his hardwork was paying off. He states, "I felt great, it was a great moment in my life." Matthews currently holds two FBS offers; Marshall and Temple University. He has also been recently contacted, but not offered, by the new coaching staff at Penn State.

Matthews stands nearly 6'2" and weighs 195 pounds. It is general consensus that high school quarterbacks typically have lower completion percentages. However, Matthews completes nearly 60% of his passes which includes a 10 for 12 day last season against fellow Washington, D.C. school Anacostia High School. Matthews also led his team to the state championship in his junior season. The team returns many seniors this upcoming season and Matthews believes they should have a solid season with a chance at a repeat as state champions.

Matthews really likes Marshall and believes that it is a great school. His lead recruiter is JaJuan Seider.

Matthews will visit Marshall on April 28th for the Green and White spring game. We will work to follow up with Matthews sometime after his visit as well as following his recruitment throughout the summer and into next season.
