Whether it was Pennington leading the Herd to an undefeated season, or Leftwich playing on a broken leg and being carried down the field by his offensive lineman, the word was out there. However, the quarterback history goes beyond that.
Dating back to 1987, the position had All American Talent. That season saw Tony Peterson lead Marshall to the 1987 Division 1-AA (Now FCS) Championship game. Currently, Peterson serves as Marshall's quarterback coach and co offensive coordinator. This past weekend he worked as part of the Marshall football camp for all ages. One minute he was coaching first and second graders, the next minute he was working with a 6'3", 190 pound up and coming prospect from Charlotte, NC.
Michael Radford came to Marshall this weekend for football camp. One thing he had to say about his experience was, "Camp was great, I enjoyed working out with Coach Peterson, He is a former Herd QB and he can still really sling it, it was a lot of fun to see him actually demonstrate the drills. I am a visual learner so it was great."
Radford knew a lot about Marshall prior to his arrival. His father actually played for Marshall in the early 1980's. His father gave him his own personal tour of campus, and of Huntington. "We spent some time at the fountain talking about all of the history around Marshall football. We also went to the old athletic dorm, Hodges Hall which has been closed for several years."
His dad not only played at Marshall but he was recruited by a young assistant coach who went on to later become one of the greatest coaches in school history, Bobby Pruett. So naturally, his dad took him to Pruett's steakhouse for dinner. He said the food was great and they actually ran into Coach Pruett. The first question out of the younger Radford's mouth was, "was my dad any good?" Pruett told him that he was pretty good, and a lot bigger back then.
Radford's parents are both from Beckley, West Virginia, so he knew quite a bit about Marshall prior to coming up. He said he has a lot of times with Marshall, and "the football tradition (at Marshall) is as good as it gets. TO have come so far from the 1970 plane crash is amazing."
Heading into camp, Radford had two other offers. So far this summer, Radford has visited multiple camps and put up some impressive stats. He ran a 4.65 40 at NC State, and had a 32 inch vertical which were both personal bests. Those came on the heels of a personal best 9'3" broad jump at the Ole Miss camp. He also won a "long ball" throwing contest at the Wake Forest camp, with a 67 yard throw.
Radford is ultra athletic. This is proven by the fact that he is not only a very good quarterback, but he is also ranked in the ESPN top 150 high School Lacrosse players to watch. Lacrosse season is over now, and it is time for football for Radford. Radford will be heading to Las Vegas next week for the Elite 11 combine.
In regards to his thoughts about his time at Marshall, and his recent offer that he picked up from the staff, most notably, lead recruiter Gerad Parker, he said it was "special." "With all of my family ties to the program, I guess I just felt like all the hard work had finally paid off and that I was one step closer to achieving my dream."
One of his favorite things about Marshall, excluding the coaching staff, was that Marshall has the same colors as his high school.
It should be a busy summer for Radford, as he heads into his senior season at Charlotte Country Day School. Two seasons ago they won the state championship, and last year they lost by 6 in the title game. Radford said they return a lot of their skill players and they hope to make another run this season.
Radford expects to determine in the coming weeks where he will make his official visits.
