August Dates to Remember for Herd Fans

Marshall University will start its 103rd season of football when the 2003 Thundering Herd reports for the start of training camp on August 5.

Marshall is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the school colors being changed to "Green and White" in 1903 (formerly Blue and Black). The Herd will play game number 100 at Marshall University Stadium when the "Pride" of Hofstra comes to town in late August. Marshall is an amazing 94-5 since beating New Hampshire 24-23 in 1991.

Here are the important dates for Marshall practices and special events for all Thundering Herd fans for 2003, up through game one:
August 2-NFL first pre-season game in Tokyo, Japan. The New York Jets, with Chad Pennington, verses the world champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with John Wade, live 5:00 a.m. ESPN2/ tape replay at 8:00 p.m., ESPN;
August 4-Big Green Club Meeting, Elks Club, Ashland, Kentucky, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Guests speakers are Head Coach Bob Pruett and Director of Athletics Bob "Kayo" Marcum;
August 5-Tip Off Club "Meet New MU Coach, Ron Jirsa" fundraiser, tickets $100 each, 5:00-7:00 p.m., call 696-6460 for tickets;
August 5-team reports, checks in dorms, fitted for equipment and physicals;
August 6-first day of five consecutive one-per-day practices for entire squad (helmet/shorts/shoulder pads). Practices on August 6, 7 and 8 at 3:00 p.m.;
August 9-One practice, 9:00 a.m. Media Day, open to Marshall Media only. Followed by interviews and picture sessions on the James F. Edwards Field, open to the public, 2:00 p.m.;
August 10-first day of "full pads" for team practices, 3:00 p.m.;
August 11-first day of two-a-day practice sessions, session one at 8:00 a.m., session two at 4:30 p.m.;
August 12 and 14 (4:30 p.m.), 16 (scrimmage 2:00 p.m.),17 (3:00 p.m.), 19 and 21 (3:30 p.m.) and 23 (Mock Game 2:00 p.m.)-one-per-day practice sessions;
August 13, 15, 18 and 22 (8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.)-two-per-day practice sessions;
August 16-Quarterback Club Reverse Raffle, tickets $100 each, call 696-6464 for tickets;
August 20-Morning practice (8:00 a.m.) and scrimmage (3:30 p.m.). "Paint the Capital City Green" event in Charleston, 6:00 p.m.;
August 24No Practice;
August 25-first day of classes at Marshall University. Practice 6:30 p.m.;
August 26-first Quarterback Club luncheon, Radisson Hotel, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Pruett Press Conference, 1:00 p.m., Shewey Athletic Center. Practice 3:30 p.m.;
August 27practice 3:30 p.m.;
August 28-practice 2:40 p.m. First
"Bob Pruett Call-In Show " from Gino's Pub on Fifth Avenue in Huntington, with Steve Cotton & Woody Woodrum, from 7:00-8:00 p.m.;
August 29walk through practice, 4:00 p.m. Hofstra walk through, tba;
August 30-Opening game, Hofstra verses Marshall, 4:30 p.m. kickoff, MU Stadium and heard on WDGG 93.7 FM and WRVC 930 AM, flagship stations for the Thundering Herd/ISP Sports Network. Marshall "M" Club hosts All-time Marshall Quarterbacks at the "M" Club Plaza, SW corner of stadium, beginning at 1:30 p.m. HERD Insider Pre-Game Show with Woody Woodrum, Robert Harper, Greg Cyrus and Greg Perry, live from the stage in the West Lot, starting at 2:30 p.m. on the ISP Network. Herd Sportsline call-in show, following the game, live on the ISP Network for the first time;
August 31player day off
