Linebacker Commits

Marshall received another commitment, their 17th of the 2013 recruiting period, on Tuesday afternoon. The Herd staff hit up a hot bed of talent in Georgia and snagged an outside linebacker which should come in and help new defensive coordinator Chuck Heater improve the defensive results from the 2012 season.

Outside linebacker Neville Hewitt, a 6'2", 220 pound athlete from Georgia Military College, committed to the Herd. Hewitt is a two star junior college prospect who played safety early in his GMC career before being moved to outside linebacker.

The 2007 recruiting class saw a similar situation for the Herd. Marshall was recruiting a player who had played safety but was being moved to linebacker, and his teammate who was playing linebacker was going to be moved to safety. Those players were Corey Hart and Franchez Pitts. Hart and Pitts both committed to play for the Herd and signed. Pitts never materialized. Hart came to campus, played a couple years, was productive, and prior to be ready to make an impact got into some trouble and was no longer on the team.

Hewitt played at safety, while his teammate, Tiquention Coleman, played linebacker. Coleman is a three star defensive back who signed in December as a mid year enrollee with Arkansas. Per an earlier scout article,, Hewitt had the size which better suited the outside linebacker position, so the switch was made.

The switch worked out very well, as Hewitt ended the season with 72 tackles.

Hewitt had also made an earlier visit to Arkansas. Hewitt had offers from Colorado State and Rutgers.
