Newcomers Ready to Play

Spring Practice is just two days away. Tuesday afternoon will be the first practice for a few Marshall football players. As many as eight, and possibly a couple more could begin their Thundering Herd careers at 3pm on Tuesday afternoon. This does exclude a handful of walk ons that should participate in spring practice to help to off set the loss of a few seniors and soon to be roster attrition.

Spring Practice is just two days away. Tuesday afternoon will be the first practice for a few new Marshall football players. As many as eight, and possibly a couple more could begin their Thundering Herd careers at 3pm on Tuesday afternoon. This does exclude a handful of walk ons that should participate in spring practice to help to off set the loss of a few seniors and soon to be roster attrition.

The eight come to Marshall in a variety of ways. There is a mid year JUCO transfer. A mid year transfer from a FBS program who has graduated already. A mid year high school senior who has finished his high school academics early. A grey shirt from the 2012 recruiting class, and two kids who had clearinghouse issues at other schools but smartly enrolled mid year last season and are now eligible to practice with the team.

Lets take a look at the names that go with the aforementioned scenarios.

First, the mid year transfer. A player who has been discussed on this site since his commitment this past December. Taj Letman is a 6'3", 195 pound safety from Holmes Community College. He enrolled early and should compete for playing time immediately. He missed all of the 2012 season do to a hand injury. A former coach mentioned after his signing that had he not been injured Marshall would have had no chance, he is that good.

The mid year transfer from an FBS program is WR Shawney Kersey from Penn State. Kersey will join former teammates Devon Smith and Derrick Thomas. Smith was redshirted last season due to an injury, Thomas played last year and should start this season at defensive back. Kersey is a taller wide receiver who was brought in to help ease the loss of Aaron Dobson. Kersey is 6'1", and 197 pounds. He should play outside where Dobson and fellow graduate Antavious Wilson played the last three years.

The mid year enrollee from high school is Boca Raton, Florida quarterback Kevin Anderson. Anderson is highly thought of from the coaching staff. Anderson missed most of his senior season due to injury. The injury occurred after his commitment to Marshall. Marshall honored the commitment and Anderson is currently on campus. Anderson will be in a red jersey this spring like all other quarterbacks. Anderson is 6'2", 204 pounds.

The 2012 greyshirt is local boy, Tyler Combs. Combs is an offensive lineman who signed last season, and began classes this January. He is eligible immediately. Combs is 6'5", 275 pounds and hails from Lawrence County, Kentucky. Combs' nickname is Big Country.

Two members of the 2013 Thundering Herd have been on campus for a year now. Corey Tindal and Kent Turene are two big time players who went to Boyd Anderson High School in Florida. Boyd Anderson is the home of Marques Aiken, and recent Marshall signee Michael Johnson. Turene is 6'3", and 238 pounds. He was highly recruited out of high school and was set to go to the University of Georgia before clearinghouse issues held it up. Turene should step in and play right away at linebacker. Do not look for him to be moved to the defensive line. Tindal finds himself right in the middle of a defensive back situation that should prove to be fun to watch. Tindal had a very similar storyline to Huntington as Turene did. He now will compete with Derrick Thomas, Monterius Lovett, Darryl Roberts and Keith Baxter for playing time in the defensive backfield.

Two other players should be practicing this spring. The aforementioned Devon Smith, from Penn State, is healthy and will partake in spring practice. Stefan Houston, a highly touted linebacker from Hargrave Military Academy joins the Herd. Houston, could step in and play right away as well provided all academic standards are met and cleared.

Two other impact recruits from the 2013 recruiting class are on campus and taking classes. It is believed that they will most likely fall into the same category of Turene and Tindal and not be eligible until next January, however, that is not been announced at this time. Angelo Jean-Louis and Deontay McManus are two impact wide receivers who at one point or another garnered four stars from Scout.com recruiting services.
