Practice 5: Tindal And The DB's

Marshall's defensive back position battled injuries throughout the season, starting before fall camp and continuing all the way through the season. These injuries severely harmed the units' ability to put up numbers that would be expected from a defensive coordinator. Rarely did two healthy defensive backs start the same game together.

Prior to the season Darryl Roberts suffered an injury which would cause the true junior to use his redshirt season. Monterious Lovett seldom practiced and was seen in a walking boot each week all the way up to and including the final game of the year. Keith Baxter also was injured throughout the season. The position was so banged up that Marshall at one point moved over Travon Van, a former four star running back.

The one player who did seem to get better throughout the season was Penn State junior transfer Derrick Thomas. Thomas took over one of the starting rolls late in the year and appears ready to maintain it through spring camp and into next season.

The unit produced only four interceptions all season long. Baxter had one, Thomas had one, and Lovett led the unit with four.

What a difference a year makes. This unit is simply loaded. The first team right now consists of Thomas and Lovett. Roberts and newcomer Corey Tindal are manning the nickel position. Currently Keith Baxter and Roberts are with the second unit. Baxter and Roberts have both started multiple games for the Herd and not just due to injury.

The unit is so deep right now that four star defensive back A.J. Leggett has been moved to safety.

Corey Tindal had a very good practice today, picking off an errant pass by Kevin Anderson, I nearly typed Brian Anderson which is not a good word for Herd fans, and returning it up the sideline. A few plays later Tindal went toe to toe with Steward Butler, a hit that caused a raucous in the middle of the field.

The battle at the defensive back position should continue throughout the spring and I would expect all of them to get playing time in this conference next season.
