Practice Report April 16

Marshall is making its way through its last few spring practices. After today's session the Herd has just five sessions remaining. The Herd will practice on Thursday then have a scrimmage on Saturday. After that, the Herd practices Tuesday and Thursday before the fifteenth and final practice session next Saturday in the annual Green and White Spring Game.

It was a cloudy day today at the Joan as Marshall took the field for yet another spirited practice. The defense continues to progress, as the offense now takes long looks at back up quarterbacks Gunnar Holcombe and Blake Frohnapfel. Coach Bill Legg announced earlier in the week that starting quarterback Rakeem Cato would see his reps get cut this week due to knowing what they have with him.

The defensive line continues to improve as the spring moves along. Keep in mind, this is with the loss of returning starter, senior, Marques Aiken who has transferred to Cincinnati, and with senior James Rouse on the sidelines with an injury. Rouse has put on weight and has been working out with the defensive tackles, as has fellow senior and seldom used Matt Pickett.

The new assistant coaches added to the Marshall staff continue to plug away and earn the respect of the players within their units. As I have stated before, the fact that Marshall has multiple coaches on the staff with high level experience, it is showing on the field. Wide receivers coach Mike Furrey acts more like a head coach, which he has been, when coaching the wide receivers.

Furrey's coaching ability continues to show as players such as DeAndre Reaves, and Craig Wilkins continue to develop into players that will be hard to keep off of the field.

Reminder, the Herd goes again at 315pm on Thursday.
