Herdhaven Game Notes: Gardner Webb

It is hard to believe, but should Marshall win this weekend against Gardner Webb, which they are heavy favorites to do, the Herd would have 2 – 0 written beside their name for the first time since 1999. Typically Marshall has a "money game," within the first two, but this year they do not. The Herd is coming off a huge win over Miami of Ohio.

Game 1 Wrap Up:

Statistical Leaders:

Rakeem Cato – 22 of 34 for 253 yards and five touchdowns
Steward Butler – 17 carries for 107 yards
Tommy Shuler – 9 catches for 67 yards and one TD
Gator Hoskins – 3 catches for 38 yards and 2 TD's
Jermaine Holmes – 8 tackles, 3 for loss, and one sack

Marshall started slow, then blew out the Redhawks in the second half, scoring 38 unanswered points to win 52 to 14. Marshall was led by Cato and company who moved the ball virtually at will in the second half. The new and improved defense held the Redhawks to less than 60 yards in the second half, and zero points.

Other standouts:

Raheem Waiters – one interception returned for a TD
Neville Hewitt – 8 tackles
Amoreto Curraj – 8 kickoffs, and 6 touchbacks

Rakeem Cato Record Watch:

Cato is on pace to break multiple records, but the two top ones would have to be the school record for career yardage and career TD's

Currently Cato has 6, 513 total passing yards, the record is held by Chad Pennington at 13,143. Should the Herd make a bowl game the next two years, Cato would need to average 265.2 yards per game to eclipse this record. Cato will move into sixth all time this weekend as he passes Carl Fodor.

Currently Cato has thrown 57 touchdown passes, good for fifth in school history. Pennington holds the record at 115, Cato would need to average 2.32 TD passes per game to break this record.
