Early Look at the Class of 2014

It is never too early to take a peak ahead at what the upcoming recruiting class is going to look like. Most experts realize that Marshall Head Coach Doc Holliday is going to be looking for the best of the best as the football season ends and rolls into the peak recruiting time frames.

Typically, Marshall, and Holliday have been very good at waiting until the final hours and pulling in some of the bigger names of the past few recruiting classes. For whatever reason, this process has worked. This year should play out the same, except for the fact that a lot of this particular class is already in place.

Recently, I went through the current roster, the current commitments, and expected non qualifiers from the past year, and the total was really close to the overall limit of 85. Keep in mind, this does not take into account any off season attrition, which happens to every program, every season, nor does it take into account any of the current commitments who may be ineligible and be pushed forward to the class of 2015, a lot like nine of the soon to be members of the 2014 class.

Let's take a quick look at how the 2014 class is taking shape:

Brandon Byrd – Running back from East Bay High School in Gibsonton, Florida. Byd is 6'0 198 pounds

Angelo Jean- Louis – Jean Louis is a 6'0", 185 pound highly rated wide receiver from Fork Union Military Academy. Jean Louis originally signed with Miami of Floida.

Deontay McManus – McManus is a big, athletic wide receiver who originally signed with West Virginia before choosing Marshall over SMU. McManus came to Marshall from the Atlanta Sports Academy. This is the same place that sent Marshall all CUSA punter Tyler Williams, starting defensive back Corey Tindal, and reserve linebacker Kent Turene. McManus is 6'2", 220 pounds.

Tony Pittman – Pittman is a 5'11", 200 pound power running back from Phoebus High School in Hampton, Virginia. Pittman picked the Herd over multiple schools most notably Cincinnati and local Old Dominion.

Chocolate Wilson – Wilson was one of the most highly regarded member of the 2013 recruiting class. Wilson is a 5'10", 170 pound defensive back who had offers from Purdue and Ole Miss.

Raheim Huskey – Huskey is 6'2", 200 pound. Huskey was on campus and able to participate in a set number of practices prior to being ineligible. He did not disappoint. He already looks like he could step in and play linebacker immediately.

Rodney Allen – Allen is a wide receiver from Texas. Allen checks in at 5'10", and only 154 pounds, but he is a football player. Like Huskey, Allen was able to participate in a few practices early in camp. Allen showed excellent speed and hands and was all over the place. His motor went full speed from start to finish. Allen should make an impact on the wide receivers next season.

Jalen Stevenson – Stevenson, like Allen and Huskey, practiced at the start of camp. Stevenson is a 6'1", 200 pound defensive end. He was originally headed to junior college before deciding to come to Marshall as a non qualifier.

There are two other players that are rumored to be non qualifiers and rumored to be heading to campus in January. Stay tuned to Herdhaven.com for further updates as the information becomes available.

Marshall currently has 11 commitments for the 2014 class. They are:
