A Look Back at the 2013 Class

Marshall is preparing for one final regular season road game at Florida International. As they prepare, I thought it would be a good time to take a look back at the 2013 recruiting class and see how they were performing this season. The Herd ended the recruiting season last year with the second rated class in CUSA behind only ECU who is leaving for the American Conference after this season.

Below is a breakdown of the 2013 class:

Four Star Angelo Jean Louis – Jean Louis is a big time wide receiver who was an academic non qualifier this season.

Three star Jeremy Benjamin – Benjamin will not be joining the Marshall program

Three star Michael Selby – Selby is an offensive lineman who has played all over the place this season. As a true freshman he has played at right and left guard, and is also capable of playing center. He has been a major impact on the front line this season. Selby could prove to be one of the top players in this class.

Two star Josh Brown – Brown is a mammoth defensive tackle who originally committed to Clemson. Brown sat out last year, but this year has played in 6 games, with 14 tackles. He also has 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack.

Three star Michael Johnson – Johnson had committed to Florida State before decommitting and choosing the Herd. Johnson has played as a true freshman. He has played in 7 games, mostly on special teams and mop up duty for now, and has 4 tackles. Johnson's speed makes it all but impossible to keep him off the field.

Two star Tiquan Lang – Lang is a safety who the staff loved during the recruiting process. "Film doesn't lie," is something that rings true about Lang. Although only two stars, he is currently starting at safety in front of last years All CUSA Freshman linebacker D.J. Hunter. Lang has played in 9 games, and started the last three. He has 23 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and picked off a pass to seal the win at Tulsa last week.

Three star Gerald Wright – Wright is an offensive lineman who currently is not part of the Marshall program.

Three star Sandley Jean Felix – Felix is a mammoth offensive lineman from Florida. Jean Felix is a redshirt at this time but is said to be getting a lot of reps in practice. He is a little raw but his size could turn him into a big contributor has his career plays out.

Three star Chris Huhn – Huhn is another large offensive lineman. He was hurt early in the year and will be redshirted.

Three star Chocolate Wilson – Wilson is a defensive back, one of the highest rated in the class. He is on campus but is an academic non qualifier at this time.

Three star Deontay McManus – McManus is a huge wide receiver who is built more like Gator Hoskins. He was an academic non qualifier who will be eligible this January.

Three star Taj Letman – Letman is a safety who was hurt prior to the start of his final JUCO season. Many coaches said that if he would not have gotten hurt we would have had no chance to get the guy who at one point was rated the number four JUCO safety in the country. Letman has not disappointed since his arrival. Letman has played in all ten games, starting nine of them. He has recorded 37 tackles on the year.

Two Star Shykeem Pitts – Pitts will not be coming to Marshall

Two Star Cody Collins – Collins is an offensive lineman who is being redshirted

Two star Kevin Anderson – Anderson is a quarterback who is being redshirted

Two star Josh Knight – Knight is a wide receiver who did very well in camp in August. Because of that he has earned playing time on special teams and some late game action at wide receiver.

Two Star Brandon Byrd – Byrd is a running back who is on campus as an academic non qualifier

Two star Tony Pittman – Pittman is a two star running back who is on campus as an academic non qualifier.

Two star Justin Hunt – Hunt is a wide receiver who, like Knight, played very well in August. Hunt has played in 9 games and he has one catch for 8 yards.

Two star Aaron Plantt – Plantt is a linebacker who is on campus, practicing, and will be redshirted.

Two star Stefan Houston – Houston is a linebacker who was vastly underrated. He committed to Maryland out of high school. Houston soared up the depth chart in August and entered the end of camp as a starter. A late injury caused his season to get a late start. Since coming back from the injury, Houston has played in seven games and started two games. Houston has racked up 36 tackles, with 5.5 tackles for loss and half a sack.

Two star Arnold Blackmon – Blackmon is a JUCO defensive end. He was supposed to be able to enroll last January, but did not arrive until May. Although this put him off to a slower start, he has recently blasted into the rotation, even more so after Jeremiah Taylor went down with an injury. Blackmon has played in nine games. He has 12 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1 sacks.

Two star Neville Hewitt – Hewitt is a JUCO linebacker. Hewitt flew up the depth chart. Hewitt has played in 10 games and started 8. Hewitt is one of the team leaders in tackles with 59. He also has 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and one interception.

Unranked Rodney Allen – Allen is a wide receiver from Texas. He is academically ineligible for this season.

Unranked Amoreto Curraj – Curraj was a walk on kicker, who has more than earned a scholarship with his production. Curraj has kicked off 70 times this year, and has produced 40 touch backs.
