JUCO OT Commits to Herd

Recruiting has been in the midst of the December/January dead period, but the Marshall coaching staff ensured the period came alive quickly. The Herd welcomed 11 prospects to campus this weekend, and three of them verbally committed. Herdhaven.com caught up with an offensive tackle prospect.

A month ago Brandon Mitchell knew where he wanted to attend school and continue his college football career. According to Mitchell all he needed to do was make a visit to Huntington, WV and Marshall University. Mitchell was recruited early on by Offensive Line Coach Alex Mirabal. "It's going good, my eyes are set to go to Marshall. I am just waiting on my visit in January," Mitchell said in a December interview with Herdhaven.com.

Mitchell is a 6'4", 315 pound offensive lineman that projects to be a tackle at the FBS level. Mitchell has spent his life in California. He attended High School at Taft High School, before attending Junior College and ending up this past season at Pierce Community College.

Mitchell said his number one goal when choosing a college was, "to find a school where I can get a great education while still playing football. I would love to go to the National Football League."

Mitchell, currently an unranked lineman, had never been outside of California, but was looking forward to a trip to the east coast. His trip did not disappoint. Mitchell had a great visit to the Marshall campus. When asked what his favorite part of the trip was, Mitchell said, "my favorite part of my visit was the cemetery and learning about Marshall's past history."

Mitchell met center Chris Jasperse and quarterback Rakeem Cato. He also got to hang out with the rest of the offensive line, and said they, "were a great group of guys."

Mitchell expects to step in and provide an instant impact at the tackle position. Marshall lost seniors Gage Niemeyer and four years starter Garrett Scott to graduation, and return very few with any experience. Former walk on Clinton Van Horn from Beckley, WV, and walk on Trevor Mendleson are the primary tackles who have taken snaps at the college level.

Mitchell was one of three recruits to commit this weekend to the Herd. Stay tuned to Herdhaven.com for further updates on the other two prospects to announce their intention to play for the Herd.
