A Look at the 2014 Offensive Line

Going into the season, the Marshall coaching staff knew they would most likely have to replenish the offensive line position via the recruiting trail, as the Herd was expected to lose several seniors. That situation proved accurate as Marshall saw multiple lineman graduate and a couple leave the program.

Going into the season, the Marshall coaching staff knew they would most likely have to replenish the offensive line position via the recruiting trail, as the Herd was expected to lose several seniors. That situation proved accurate as Marshall saw multiple lineman graduate and a couple leave the program. Marshall expected to lose lineman like Alex Schooler, Jordan Jefferies, Garrett Scott and Gage Niemeyer. However, they were not expected to battle the loss of Josh Murriell, and Josh Lovell. Murriell was a two star tackle who left the program, and Lovell was a three star lineman who could play anywhere but center. The loss of those two guys and the non arrival of three star Jamar Lewter, has worked against the Herd in regards to depth at the offensive tackle position.

Currently Marshall returns five true offensive tackles. Of those five, two are current or previous walk on's in redshirt senior Trevor Mendleson, and redshirt junior to be Clint Van Horn. Van Horn started most of last season and expects to return to that roll this year. The remaining three tackles on the roster have no game reps. Redshirt sophomore Eric Ansley, and redshirt freshmen Sandley Jean Felix and Chris Huhn. Both Jean Felix and Huhn are coming off injuries from last year.

Marshall will welcome two new additions to the roster with this years recruiting haul.

Brandon Mitchell – Mitchell is a two star offensive tackle who expects to come in this summer and compete for a spot along the line in the two deep. Mitchell has long arms and should be able to battle for the open left tackle position.

A.J. Addison – Addison is a two star offensive tackle from Fork Union. Addison is the epitome of an offensive tackle, standing at 6'7", and weighing nearly 300 pounds. Addison was recruited out of high school by Virginia before going to pre p school. The best news for offensive line coach Alex Mirabel is Addison is already on campus and will be participating in spring practice.

The offensive guard position is a little more stable. Last season the starters at the beginning of the year were Sebastion Johansson and Alex Schooler. Schooler graduated, however, by the end of the season, freshman Michael Selby and former walk on Blake Brooks were getting meaningful reps and were along the line when Marshall scored two important touchdowns against Maryland in the Military Bowl.

Marshall also returns Cam Dees who could play at center or guard. Dees missed last year due to injury after playing effectively as a true freshman. Other guards returning are redshirt freshmen Cody Collins and Tyler Combs.

With the most recent recruiting class, the Herd added two solid guards.

Two star Freddie Binot is a potential star. The 6'3", 270 pound guard has a ton of talent and ability and should flourish under Mirabel.

Two star Jordan Dowrey has been described by Mirabel as a mean, hard nosed, scrappy football player. Dowrey is also a standout wrestler in Virginia who has not lost in over two years.

At center, Marshall is pretty well set deep into the depth chart. Heading the way is All CUSA performer and captain Chris Jasperse. The former walk on from Florida has emerged as both a leader and a face for the program. Behind Jasperse will be Michael Selby who nearly played well enough to move Jasperse over to guard, where Jasperse played some as a freshman and sophomore. Dees has played center, and Marshall welcomed one of the top centers in the country this signing day with the inking of three star standout Nathaniel Devers. Devers, originally committed to Cincinnati before flipping to Bill Legg and Marshall on signing day.

A way to early projected depth chart could be:

Left Tackle – Mendleson, Addison Left Guard – Johansson, Brooks Center – Jasperse, Selby Right Guard – Selby, Collins Right Tackle – Van Horn, Mitchell
