Son of Marshall Returns

Marshall University began its search for a Head Basketball coach over 40 days ago. Many names have come and gone, but throughout the process one name was always there, Mike D'Antoni. D'Antoni as most know, is the current coach for the Los Angeles Lakers. Marshall fans far and wide were excited of the slim chance this could happen.

It was announced yesterday that Mike D'Antoni was no longer a candidate for the job. Since that point many names began to be mentioned, then removed from contention.

Finally, with the announcement via twitter that Mike Hamrick had made a decision, and it was an exciting time for Marshall athletics, the fans had a coach. But who was it.

Surprise, it was a D'Antoni, just Mike's older brother and current Laker assistant Dan D'Antoni.

D'Antoni played at Marshall from 1966 to 1970, and was an assistant coach from 1970 to 1971.

D'Antoni then began a career that saw him hold only four jobs, but extended over 38 years. He was the head basketball coach at Socastee High School in South Carolina, then was an assistant with his younger brother Mike for the Suns, Knicks, and Lakers.

This will be Dan's first head coaching at the college level.

Marshall has lost returning starting point guard Kareem Canty, but expect D'Antoni to come in and find a replacement as soon as possible.
