Here at Herdhaven.com we continue to try to get you through the summer months with flash back articles based on how many days remain until opening kickoff.
Marshall opens the season on August 20th on the road in Oxford , Ohio against Miami of Ohio. Kickoff is in just 86 days.
Our first look back will be to the year 1986. Marshall had just completed its second consecutive winning season. George Chaump was at the helm and the Herd seemed poised to take a leap into the division 1-AA playoffs. The Herd got off to a great start and heading into the last two games of the season held a 6 – 2 – 1 record. Marshall was set to end the season at home to Appalachian State then on the road to Western Carolina.
Marshall fell behind early in each game and could not battle back. The Herd lost both games and ended the season with six wins, four losses, and a tie. They would have to wait yet another season in order to participate in post season play. As many of you know, Marshall accomplished that feat a year later and made a run all the way to the National Championship game before losing a late night heartbreaker in Pocatello, Idaho.
Marshall was led by John Gregory at quarterback.
The leading rusher for the Herd was Darryl DeBoes. DeBoed had 112 rushes for 489 yards and 8 touchdowns. Sophomore, and future College Football Hall of Famer, Mike Barber led the Herd in receiving. Barber ended the year with 1,180 yards receiving and just 64 catches. Barber averaged 18.4 yards per catch and grabbed 7 touchdowns.
Eighty Six years ago, Marshall put up a very good season. The year was 1928, Herbert Hoover was the new president, Mickey Mouse was starring in his third cartoon, and Tich Freeman set an all time record for the number of wickets taken in an England Cricket season. In Huntington, the Thundering Herd, led by coach Charles Tallman was putting up a great season on the gridiron.
The captains of the team were Ralph Young and Frank Porter. Marshall would end the season with 8 wins, one loss and one tie. The Herd started the season with a tie on the road against William and Mary. Marshall wound put together eight wins on the year which included a road win 13 to 0 against the Louisville Cardinals.
Who did the Herd lose to you may ask? Marshall lost on the road to Centre College, 20 – 6.
Who is Centre College? Here is your history lesson for the day. The Centre College Colonels, known when they beat the Herd as the Praying Colonels is a small Liberal Arts school located in Danville, Kentucky. The school was established in 1918 and has just 1,381 students, but they still suit up 22 sports teams.
As recently as 2008, Centre College ranked 12th in college football history in total wins with an overall record of 509 wins, 374 losses, and 37 ties. In 1921, Harvard was the Alabama of today. The Crimson scheduled the Praying Colonels for a game at Harvard expecting a quick win. Centre became the first school outside of the east to ever beat one of the Big Three, Harvard, Yale or Princeton. They won the game 6 – 0 in what the college football hall of fame has labeled one of the top two greatest upsets in college football history.
That was not all of their history. In 1924, Centre College defeated Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia and four consecutive weekends.
Staying a little closer to 2014, Marshall wide receiver Josh Knight is number 86 on the roster. Knight is a 6'0", 186 pound wide receiver from Fort Pierce Central High School in Fort Pierce, Florida. Knight will be a true sophomore this upcoming season as he played last year on special teams. Knight could factor into the mix at the wide receiver position in the 2014 season.
Stay tuned to Herdhaven.com as we flash back as we look forward to the start of the 2014 season.
