A week ago today, the 2014 version of the Marshall Thundering Herd football team hit the field to begin practice in what should be its most successful season in over a decade. Not since 1999, has Marshall entered a year with a legitimate chance to run the table. The newcomers and younger players began in the morning session with the veterans and returning depth chart guys hitting the field in the afternoon. The morning sessions throughout the week allowed Herd fans the ability to watch incoming freshman such as Nate Devers, Chocolate Wilson, Hyleck Foster, Tomell One, and others.

Earlier in the month, Coach Doc Holliday actually mentioned both Foster and One as players he thought could step in and play as true freshman. After just one practice session it was easy to see where this assessment had come from. One is a big bodied interior defensive lineman who is very strong and athletic. He should step in and back up veteran stars James Rouse, Steve Dillon and Jarquez Samuel.

Foster on the other hand, came in with huge numbers out of Gafney, South Carolina. He is not just a scat back, or slot wide receiver. Foster is built like a college junior who could play right now. He is fast, and has incredible moves. Throughout the first week he has dropped very few passes in any drill, and is solid in the return game.

The afternoon sessions contained mostly returning players, however, one incoming wide receiver was with the veteran group throughout the week. Wide receiver Emanuel Beal, wearing number 82 this season looked like Josh Davis of old. Granted, that could have been because they are similar in size and both wear number 82. I am not sure how long Beal will be wearing number 82, as one of the best quotes I heard at yesterday’s fan/media day was Beal talking to D.J. Hunter. Beal said he could not wait until Hunter was done so he could have his number. They laughed, and continued to visit with fans.

Holliday surprised a lot of people by running tight end/full back Devon Johnson out as the first team running back at the beginning of camp. This coming of course due to the recent dismissal of junior running back Kevin Grooms who was expected to start and be a potential all CUSA running back. Marshall is left with junior Steward Butler, junior Remi Watson, and freshman Tony Pittman and Brandon Byrd.

Watson and Butler have got the bulk of the reps at running back, today Pittman was getting reps ahead of Byrd. Byrd is a big running back, both run very hard. Both were non qualifiers from last season and are eligible and ready to play. Speaking with Byrd yesterday, he was very excited to be back on the football field and playing the game.

New Players from the 2014 recruiting class on the roster are:

2 Hyleck Foster
4 Chocolate Wilson
5 Donquell Green
11 Michael Birdsong
25 Kaleb Harris
26 Kendall Gant
27 Tony Pittman

In other news, the Thundering Herd has new football uniforms. They uniform, pictured at the top of this article is more modern and has implemented a lot more black into the look. The players were very excited over the new look. The Herd will continue to wear their White Helmet with the block green M, and the same uniforms on the road as last season. I was even told that the old white jersey goes very well with the new green pants. The new pants have a stripe, the Herd has not had a stripe on their pants since the early 1990’s.

In addition to the building of the indoor practice facility, it appears the school is building a welcome sign of some type on the front corner of the Annex lot along Fifth Avenue.

Season tickets remain on sale with many different sales and options.

Marshall currently has 14 commitments for next years class. The class is led by three star commits Delvin Weems, Chase Litton, Ty Tyler, Marquis Couch, Roosevelt Lawrence and Larry Dunnon.

Tyler was recently rated as a three star linebacker.

Expect some announcements in the coming days for freshman non qualifiers who will enroll and attend class at Marshall in 2014, and the spring of 2015 before being eligible in 2015.

A few members of the class of 2014 will not make it to campus.
