A Look at The Early Commitments

Kickoff is just around the corner. How close is it? Just ten days from today the 2014 Thundering Herd will kick off their regular season in Oxford, Ohio against the Miami Redhawks. Throughout the season the Herd will welcome multiple high school, prep, and junior college prospects to campus in hopes of them continuing their playing careers at Marshall.

Today, Herdhaven.com will take a quick look back at the players who have already committed to the Herd. Throughout the season the staff at Herdhaven.com will work to provide updates from the players games that particular weekend. Remember to check back in each weekend to see how their teams faired.

Listed below are the fourteen players who have committed to sign with Marshall this February:

Three Star Players:

Ty Tyler – Tyler is a three star linebacker from Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Florida. Tyler is 6’3”, and 225 pounds. Currently he is rated three stars and is the 98th ranked linebacker in the country.

Marquis Couch – Couch was the first commitment for the Herd in the Class of 2015. Coach committed to the Herd just a couple weeks after National Signing Day 2014. Couch is a 6’0”, 225 pound outside linebacker from Miami Central High School in Miami, Florida. Miami Central is the home of current Marshall stars Rakeem Cato and Tommy Shuler as well as defensive back Donaldven Manning. Couch is rated three stars and is the 125th ranked outside linebacker in the country.

Roosevelt Lawrence – Lawrence is another three star recruit that is committed to the Herd. Lawrence is also ranked as the 155th best cornerback in the nation. Lawrence is 6’0”, 170 pounds. He attends Alonso High School in Tampa, Florida.

Delvin Weems – Weems is also ranked three stars. Weems is from Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, Georgia. Sandy Creek is the alma mater of current Marshall third string quarterback, true freshman Cole Garvin. Weems is small, but very fast and electric. He is 5’8”, 158 pounds. Weems is rated as the 161st best running back.

Larry Dunnon – Dunnon could turn out to be one of the most exciting and best players in the class. Dunnon has offers from multiple BCS schools. He is rated three stars and is ranked as the 189th best wide receiver in the nation. Dunnon brings height to the wide receiver position as he stands 6’3” tall, and weighs 206 pounds.

Chase Litton – The final three star recruit who has committed to the Herd is mid year enrollee to be, Chase Litton. Litton is a tall, athletic quarterback from Tampa Florida, via Wharton High School. Litton is 6’5”, and just under 200 pounds. Litton expects to battle Gunnar Holcombe, Cole Garvin, and Michael Birdsong for a starting position at quarterback in the spring of 2015.

Alex Locklear – Locklear is one of the best players in the state of West Virginia. Locklear is a hulking 6’5”, 295 pound lineman from nearby Spring Valley High School. He is currently rated two stars by scout.com.

Logan Grieser – Grieser is another offensive lineman who will be expected to come in and compete right away. Marshall will lose two starting offensive lineman and one back up in Chris Jasperse, Blake Brooks and Trevor Mendleson. Grieser is from Arlington, High School. Grieser is a two star prospect with tremendous upside. Going into his senior year he weighs 280 pounds and is 6’3” tall.

Jason Jean – Jean is yet another player from Miami Central High School. Jean joins Marquis Couch as players coming to the Herd from Central this upcoming season. Jean is currently unrated and is projected to play offensive guard in college.

Sage Lewis – Lewis is a two star linebacker from Montsignor Pace High School in Miami, Florida. Lewis is 6’1”, and 210 pounds.

Carlos Pickett – Pickett is a two star safety from Brunswick High School in Brunswick, Georgia.

Travis Amey – Amey is currently an unranked, two star cornerback from Tallahassee, Florida. He will play his senior season at Leon High School. Amey is 5’10” and 165 pounds. His best commodity is his speed. Amey has been clocked running a 4.38 forty.

Raylen Elzy – Elzy is a wide out from The Atlanta Sports Academy. The aforementioned Chase Litton was set to go to the Sports Academy before changing his mind. The Atlanta Sports Academy was the former home of current players Corey Tindal, Kent Turene, and Tyler Williams. Elzy is another tall wide out that will add a different aspect to the Herd’s offense. Elzy is 6’4”, and 200 pounds.

Jeremiah Mitchell – Mitchell rounds out the commitment list thus far. Mitchell is the only non high school player on the list as he will be coming to the herd from Riverside College in Riverside, California. Mitchell is a 6’5”, 260 pound defensive end. Marshall will be losing two senior defensive ends to graduation in Arnold Blackmon and RaShawde Myers. Mitchell will come in along with defensive lineman Jason Smith and Malik Thompson in January.
