In 1986 Marshall played its first game ever on August 30th, and only its second all time in the month of August. Marshall beat West Virginia Tech 42 to 0.

In 1997 Marshall travelled to West Virginia for the first time in the modern era. The Herd, playing its first ever game in the Division 1-A level, led in the fourth quarter behind Chad Pennington and Randy Moss. Marshall would end up losing 42 to 31.

In 2003, Marshall ,led by Head Coach Bob Pruett, playing its first game without Chad Pennington, Eric Kresser or Byron Leftwich at quarterback since 1994, beat Hofstra 45 to 21.

In 2008, Marshall, coached by former safety Mark Snyder, beat Illinois State 35 to 10.

Freshman to Watch –

Wide Receiver Angelo Jean Louis will get his first start as he plays in his first ever collegiate football game. He will be wearing number 15.

Other freshman expected to play are Kicker Nick Smith, defensive back Antavis Rowe, Safety Kendall Gant, defensive lineman Tomell One, defensive back Chocolate Wilson, wide receivers Emmanuel Beal, Hyleck Foster and Donquell Green. Dynamic defensive end Jerome Dews also should get some time during rush downs.

Cato Watch –

Rakeem Cato is on pace to pass many national and school records. We will keep an eye on these chases as the season progresses.

Currently Cato has thrown for 10, 176 total yards. He is 2,967 yards behind Chad Pennington, and 1,727 yards behind Byron Leftwich. He is currently third in school history.

Currently Cato has thrown 91 touchdown passes. He is second all time at Marshall, just 26 behind Chad Pennington.

Tommy Shuler Watch –

Shuler is vying to be the first player in NCAA history to have three straight 100 catch season. Shuler currently stands at 230 catches, for 2,425 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Shuler is fourth all time in receptions. He is 19 behind Mike Barber, 42 behind Darius Watts, and 76 behind Josh Davis.

Shuler is 9th all time in receiving yards.

Shuler is just outside the top 10 in touchdowns.

Other Notes:

Marshall will be wearing their new all green uniforms on the road as Miami has a white out.

Four of the five offensive lineman listed with the “twos” on the depth chart are freshman. A.J. Addison, Cody Collins, Chris Huhn and Sandley Jean Felix.

Marshall could use as many as four running backs. Devon Johnson, Remi Watson, Steward Butler and freshman Brandon Byrd could also get carries.
