Week One Recap

Marshall stormed out to an early 28 to 3 halftime lead behind an excellent first half performance from Rakeem Cato, and Devon Johnson. Miami of Ohio came out at halftime with 17 points to pull to within eight, before the Herd scored to set the final score at 42 to 27.

The first half looked like the Marshall team that most experts expected to see The third quarter showed the Herd failing on multiple third down conversions and turning the ball over once, which led to the defense spending an awful lot of time on the field. By the time the final second ticked off the clock, Miami had won the time of possession battle by 34:46 to 25:14. Miami ran 85 plays compared to the Herd’s 68.

Rakeem Cato completed 14 of 18 passes in the first half, and ended the day 20 of 32 for 261 yards and three touchdown passes. Cato also rushed for one touchdown. Newly appointed starting running back Devon Johnson led the rushing attack with 152 yards on 19 carries, and two touchdowns. Remi Watson added 31 yards on 9 carries.

Tight End Eric Frohnapfel led the team with five catches for 54 yards, followed by Tommy Shuler with 4 catches for 40 yards. Freshman outside receiver Angelo Jean-Louis had one catch for 39 yards.

Now time for the Herdhaven.com players of the game.

Chris Jasperse – I know it seems odd not to pick the running back who gained over 150 yards, or the ALL CUSA quarterback, but Jasperse was leading an offensive line with three new starters and a fourth starter playing a different position. The line flourished early, before the injury bug jumped up and got the Big Swede. When Marshall needed to plow some holes for Devon Johnson late in the game to put the game out of reach, Jasperse and his line came up big.

Arnold Blackmon – Blackmon is in his second and final year at Marshall after transferring in last year from Junior College. Blackmon played very little early last year then began to come on strong as the year ended. He got his first start this past weekend and did not disappoint. Blackmon ended the game with five tackles from his defensive end position. That included two quarterback sacks and two quarterback hurries.

Marshall plays its first home game September 6th at 7pm against the Rhode Island Rams.

Several Freshman played their first game for the Herd. Those included, Antavis Rowe, A.J. Addison, Angelo Jean- Louis, Deontay McManus, Kaare, Vedvik, Chocolate Wilson, Cody Carter, Sandley Jean Felix, Ryan Yurachek, and Rodney Allen.

Miami of Florida transfer Ricardo Williams, now wearing number 92 also saw his first action.

Antavis Rowe ended up playing well over 40 plays at the nickel position. His role seems to be a lot like last year when freshman Corey Tindal worked his way into the lineup at the nickel spot.

AJ Addison, a true freshman offensive tackled stepped in early when left tackle Sebastian Johansson went down with an injury. Addison the rest of the game at the spot.

Steward Butler and Keith Baxter did not play.
