Sneak Peak at 2014/15 Marshall Basketball

The Dan D’Antoni era as a coach is barely two weeks away from starting. The fans will get their first look at D’Antoni’s Thundering Herd this Thursday night at the Herd’s annual Thundering Herd Madness.



The open practice/scrimmage should being around 7pm at the Cam Henderson Center. Marshall will open its season with a scrimmage game on November 8th against Concord before starting the season on the 14th at home against Jacksonville State.

Herdhaven.com will now take a quick look at your 2014/2015 Thundering Herd Basketball Team:

15 – Devince Boykins – Boykins is a 6’4”, 210 pound junior guard. Boykins played last year and is expected to start. As a sophomore the ultra athletic Boykins averaged just 3.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

23 – Justin Edmonds – Edmonds is a redshirt junior who came to Marshall last season from Owens Community College. Edmonds was injured last year and sat out as a redshirt. He will have two seasons to play. He is a thick 6’4”220 pounds and looks more like a linebacker than a basketball player. Edmonds was the 76th ranked JUCO two years ago before signing with Marshall. He averaged 18 points and 4.3 rebounds per game prior to his transfer.

3 – Jay Johnson – Johnson is a 6’7”, 232 pound forward from Versailles, Kentucky. He transferred to Marshall from John Logan College in Illinois. Prior to coming to Marshall he averaged 10.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Johnson should play a big part in the rotation this season.

31 – JP Kambola – Kambola missed all of last season due to eligibility issues. He will be a senior this season. Kambola is 6’9”, 244 pounds and will add some size to the roster.

35 – Austin Loop – Loop is a former walk on from South Webster High School in South Webster, Ohio. Loop earned a scholarship last season. Loop is known as a three point specialist. Loop averaged 3.2 points last year in less than 6 minutes of playing time.

32 – Tamron Manning – Manning is a 6’4”, 210 pound guard/point guard. Manning will be a junior this season. Manning is from Scott County High School in Georgetown, Kentucky. Last season Manning averaged 4.1 points and 1.5 assists per game. The Herd will need big time production from Manning this season.

50 – Milan Mijovic – Mijovic is a 6’9”, 260 pound big man from Belgrade, Serbia. He last played at the Secondary Vocational School. Mijovic is a project but could be expected to play big minutes early and often. In his most recent season he averaged a double double and still managed to dish out over 5 assists per game as well.

21 – Aleksa Nikolic – Nikolic is alsor from Serbia. When recruited he was 6’5”, and some reports have him pushing 6’7” tall right now. He weighs just shy of 190 pounds. He is a very talented point guard who can shoot, drive, and dish the basketball. He showed his talent last season at Electro-Tech School when he averaged 20.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 8 assists per game.

5 – Cheikh Sane – Sane is a 6’9”, 225 pound power forward. Sane is a senior this season. He transferred to Marshall last year from Snow College in Utah. He played in nearly every game and when healthy showed signs of dominance. He ended the season averaging just 3.2 points and 5 rebounds per game. Sane will be counted on heavily this upcoming season.

10 – Shawn Smith – Smith is a 6’6”, 228 pound shooting guard from the College of San Francisco. Smith started 15 games last season but would usually set down early on in the half and not return. He still managed to average 7.6 points per game and became a very good outside shooter. Smith will most likely start this season.

25 – Ryan Taylor – Taylor will start in the middle or at the four position this year. Taylor was the most dominating player on the floor last year as a freshman for the Herd. Taylor nearly went to Louisville before coming to Marshall. Taylor enters his sophomore season at 6’5” and a slimmed down 225 pounds. He is from Hargrave Military Academy. He averaged 12.8 points per game and led the team with 7.2 rebounds per game. Taylor will be expected to lead the team this year in both aspects.

Others participating Thursday should be Stevie Browning, CJ Burks, James Kelly, and Brett Bowling.
