Marshall Set for Big Recruiting Weekend

The Marshall Thundering Herd Football team has three remaining regular season football games yet. This weekend the Herd will play at home against 6 – 3 Rice. Rice defeated the Herd in the CUSA championship game in Houston last December. Marshall looks to avenge that loss as it tries to creep into the top 25 of the Playoff rankings.

In addition to preparing for Rice, the Herd is also prepared to have three official visitors on campus this weekend as potential members to the 2015 recruiting class.

Let’s take a look at the visitor list:

Delvin Weems – Weems is a three star running back out of Georgia. He attends Sandy Creek High School. Sandy Creek is the high school alma mater of current Marshall freshman quarterback Cole Garvin. Garvin was a two star quarterback who was a member of the 2014 recruiting class.

Weems is a 5’8, 158 pound speedster. Weems is the 162nd ranked running back in the country at this time. Weems committed to Marshall back on in April, and has remained a solid commitment throughout the recruiting process thus far.

Weems would enter a running back group next season that will be very deep, however, it will also have a lot of upper classman. The top three running backs on the team, Devon Johnson, Steward Butler and Remi Watson will all be seniors next season. Those three, plus the loss of Kevin Grooms before the season began puts the running back position at a position of need. Marshall will have two sophomore backs next year in Tony Pittman and Brandon Byrd, both have seen action this season and both have scored their first career touchdowns. Byrd’s coming against Akron, and Pittman on the road at Southern Miss this past week.

Raylen Elzy – Elzy is a two star wide receiver out of The Atlanta Sports Academy. Elzy is a tall, strong wide receiver. Standing 6’4”, 200 pounds, Elzy could step right in and be prepared to replace outside receivers such as Davonte Allen and Craig Wilkins. Wilkins will finish his eligibility this season, and Allen will be a redshirt senior next year.

Elzy committed to Marshall back in July, and will be making his official visit this weekend.

The third and final official visit will be made by three star running back Devonte Williams. Williams would be a huge get for the Thundering Herd coaching staff. Williams is a 5’10”, 170 pound running back from the Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland. Typically that area of the country is recruited by defensive line coach JC Price.

Williams has interest from schools all across the country, and has multiple offers. His offer list includes Western Michigan, Toledo, Temple, Indiana, Hawaii, and Buffalo. Williams is the 145th ranked running back in the country. As mentioned earlier, due to have three senior running backs next year, the running back position appears to be a position of need.

Stay tuned to Herdhaven.com as we follow up with the visitors next week to get their reaction.
